When you?ve got saved sufficient money to buy a brand new car, or have already spent your financial savings on the new car of your dreams ? congratulations! There isn?t a thrill like cruising around city in your brand new car you worked so onerous for. But earlier than you start cruising, it?s a must to take into consideration getting insurance on your new car ? ideally, low cost insurance coverage to your new car.

How will you get low-cost insurance coverage on your new automotive when you have never had an automotive insurance coverage coverage? Take into account these three suggestions:

Check out the security of your new car. Before you purchase your new automobile, try the safety features. If in case you have already bought your new car and it does not embrace sure security features, add them. Vehicles with safety features are seen as much less dangerous to insure than vehicles with out security features; subsequently, insurance coverage firms give cheaper car insurance quotes to drivers who own secure cars.

Ask about ?spinning off? of another car insurance policy. In case you have ever been on one other driver?s automobile insurance policy, corresponding to your dad and mom? automobile insurance policy, ask the insurance coverage company about ?spinning off? of that automotive insurance coverage policy onto your individual car insurance policy. You will have your own automobile insurance coverage coverage, and you?ll almost certainly get a less expensive premium than you would should you purchased a new automotive insurance coverage coverage out right.

Add yourself to another car insurance policy. If you are married, or have parents who trust your driving habits, ask when you will be added to their car insurance coverage policy. This may increasingly raise their premiums a bit, but you possibly can pay the difference and the distinction will be less expensive than buying a totally separate automobile insurance policy.

Remember, all states require some form of car insurance coverage or financial responsibility. Do not danger large fines and a suspended driver?s license by neglecting to buy insurance on your new car.

Sarkozy clings to nuclear energy amid protests (AP)

PIERRELATTES, France ? French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Friday it would be madness to reduce his country's huge reliance on nuclear power, despite worldwide wariness after Japan's Fukushima disaster and protests this week over the dangers of waste.

As countries ? including neighboring Germany ? renounce nuclear energy in the wake of the tsunami-triggered meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear plant earlier this year, France has remained a bastion of atomic power. France depends on it for three-quarters of its electricity, more than any other country.

Sarkozy, expected to run for re-election in April against a leftist who wants to shut down French reactors, argued that abandoning nuclear energy would destroy jobs and cost billions that France cannot afford as it strains to rein in debts and reduce unemployment at nearly 10 percent.

"We do not have the right to break with the political consensus of the last 65 years at the risk of destroying jobs in French industry. It's madness," he told nuclear industry workers in southern France.

He spoke as German police were patrolling a train carrying nuclear waste reprocessed in France on its way to a controversial storage site that protesters say is unsafe.

French protesters clashed with riot police and damaged train track as the train tried to leave the reprocessing plant in the northern region of Normandy earlier this week. German police used water cannons late Thursday night on protesters trying to block a crossroads at Metzingen, near the destination in northern Germany, after fireworks and paint were thrown at officers.

It's the first shipment of nuclear waste from France to Germany since Berlin decided to shut all its nuclear plants by 2022, following the disaster at Fukushima. But officials haven't yet resolved where waste should be stored permanently, and activists argue the site in Gorleben, near the German town of Dannenberg, is unsafe.

In France, leaders on the left and right have been unswervingly devoted to nuclear energy for decades ? a strategic choice dating to the oil shocks of the 1970s.

That is, until now. The Socialist presidential candidate, Francois Hollande, has pledged to shut down more than 20 nuclear reactors, the boldest such proposal for any mainstream French party in the nuclear era. It's a sign of how far the political fallout from Fukushima has spread.

Sarkozy is hoping the economic crisis will trump fears about nuclear security. French consumers pay less then most Europeans for electricity.

Sarkozy has also argued that a rise in energy prices would hurt French factories and force more companies to move overseas to countries with cheaper labor.

Supporters of cleaner energy sources say windmill farms and solar facilities would create new jobs and that maintaining nuclear energy is also very costly ? notably because of the high price of keeping plants and nuclear material safe.

Ex-CEO wants Olympus to come clean on scandal (AP)

TOKYO ? Olympus Corp.'s former CEO expressed confidence Thursday that justice would be served as Japanese investigators probe the cover-up of massive investment losses at the company that has become one of Japan's biggest financial scandals.

But Michael Woodford, 51, who met with Japanese prosecutors, police and financial authorities earlier in the day, acknowledged the investigation into the huge accounting irregularities that date back decades at Olympus will likely take a long time.

He also told reporters he was prepared to return to lead the Tokyo-based camera and medical equipment company with a new "dream team" of directors.

Woodford was fired as CEO last month after questioning dubious accounting at Olympus, but he remains on the board and can only be removed by shareholders.

He said he plans to confront the Olympus board Friday. He already has spoken with the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and the Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission.

Woodford said Japan cannot evade getting to the bottom of the scandal, because he had gone so public, the scandal has the attention of the international media, and U.S. and British authorities are also investigating.

"This story will be different," he said. "Olympus may be the way this country changes, maybe a bit for the better."

He was speaking at a panel at a Tokyo hall sponsored by The Economist magazine and answered questions from other reporters and guests.

Under intense pressure, Olympus has admitted that a $687 million payment to an obscure Wall Street firm for financial advice and expensive acquisitions were used to cover up investment losses dating to the 1990s.

The board abruptly ousted Woodford for questioning the deals and payment. At the time, Olympus said Woodford was sacked because his management style was incompatible with the company's culture.

The scandal has cast a harsh light on Japanese corporate governance, which has been repeatedly criticized as falling behind global standards.

Recent media reports have pointed to possible ties between Tokyo-based Olympus and organized crime, but an outside panel created by Olympus to investigate its accounting has said it has so far found no evidence of such ties.

Woodford was a 30-year employee at Olympus and had led its European business. He said the dubious investments were handled by headquarters in Japan.

Japanese corporate practices, such as cross shareholding, in which friendly companies hold shares in each other, worked to silence opposition, he said.

If accepted back as head of Olympus, Woodford promised change, picking the American model of corporate transparency and governance.

"I would make sure my company was exemplary," he said.

But he refused comment on another legal case of a Japanese whistleblower, in which a Japanese court ruled against the company and for the Olympus employee. In that case, Olympus is appealing to the Supreme Court a ruling that the company penalized the worker unfairly.

Woodford went public with his concerns after his sacking, and has become a hero among circles hopeful for better corporate governance in Japan.

Tsuyoshi Kikukawa resigned as president on Oct. 26 and was replaced by Shuichi Takayama. The company blamed the accounting scheme on Kikukawa, former executive vice president Hisashi Mori and ex-auditor Hideo Yamada.

Olympus announced late Thursday it officially accepted the resignation of the three from the company board, saying they have "sincerely" cooperated in the investigation so far and are expected to do so without the titles. That means the three men won't attend Friday's board meeting.

Prosecutors are questioning the executives, according to Kyodo news agency.

Takayama, the new president, said in a statement that "We, the current management, are prepared to resign our post as soon as we see Olympus taking the road to recovery." Takayama, however, said he is not leaving immediately because his task is to tackle the crisis and get over "mounting problems."

The company must fully investigate the scandal and change its management system to one that is socially acceptable, he said.

"Any attempt of self-protection among the management is not acceptable," Takayama said, adding that he planned to present reform plans at the next shareholders' meeting.

Olympus risks being delisted from the Tokyo Stock Exchange unless it can rectify past filings with regulators by reporting revised earnings by Dec. 14.

The company's shares lost four-fifths of their value after the scandal erupted in mid-October but have since recovered on optimism that Olympus will avoid removal.

The issue gained 17 percent Thursday, its maximum gain allowed for a single day, to finish at 1,019 yen.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange was closed Wednesday for a national holiday. Olympus shares had surged Tuesday after the panel said it had found no evidence of links to organized crime.

The practice of hiding investment losses through funny bookkeeping and paper companies has surfaced before in Japan, especially in the 1990s, when mergers and acquisitions became a way for companies to survive in the depressed economy that followed the bursting of Japan's real estate bubble.

Such scandals have previously ensnared other major names in Japan Inc., such as Yamaichi Securities Co., which went bankrupt in 1997, and cosmetics maker Kanebo, which was forced to undergo a government-backed bailout in 2005.

Turkish trial of journalists raises human rights concerns

Turkish journalists Ahmet Sik and?Nedim Sener appeared in court today in a trial that has some questioning the health of Turkey's democracy, long considered a model in the Muslim world.

Several Turkish journalists appeared in court today for the start of a trial that has sparked fears of growing authoritarianism in the Muslim-majority democracy.

Two investigative reporters who had been writing about judicial and police corruption are among those implicated in the alleged conspiracy to overthrow the country?s Islamic-rooted government.

Turkey?s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has frequently been praised by the United States and European Union for enacting judicial reforms and wresting power from the country?s once-dominant military.?However in the past four years, hundreds of people have been arrested in connection with a series of sprawling terror investigations that critics claim are a tool for stifling dissent.

?Anyone opposing the government is going to prison, and all the others are now censoring themselves,? says Yonca Sik, the wife of Ahmet Sik, one of the journalists charged.??If people are satisfied with this democracy then I wish them luck and happiness, but it is not my definition of democracy.?

The case, in which 13 people face trial, was adjourned until Dec. 26 after the defense requested the replacement of the presiding judge, since he is a plaintiff in another case against one of the defendants.

Accused of spreading propaganda for the "Ergenekon" gang ? an alleged hard-line secularist terror group ? their case forms part of a far larger investigation in which some 400 people are on trial.

Around 600 more people, including city mayors, lawyers, political activists, and more journalists, are charged in relation to another probe targeting the civilian wing of the Kurdish separatist rebel group, the Kurdistan Workers Party.

Last month, a prominent publisher and free speech activist, Ragip Zarakolu, and an Istanbul-based political science professor were among those arrested.

According to Emma Sinclair-Webb, Turkey researcher for Human Rights Watch, the cases expose serious shortcomings in the Turkish judicial system.

New law in Malaysia to regulate demonstrations (AP)

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia ? Malaysia's government is introducing a new law to regulate public demonstrations amid rising pressure to improve civil liberties ahead of national elections expected next year.

The Peaceful Assembly Bill nevertheless falls short of demands by opposition and human rights groups for authorities to allow street demonstrations.

Malaysia's de facto law minister Nazri Aziz told Parliament on Tuesday that the bill will require organizers of demonstrations to provide police with advance notice of at least 30 days.

The planned law forbids street protests. Officials have repeatedly urged demonstrators to gather in stadiums or confined venues to avoid public disruptions.

Arab League takes firm line with Syria on monitors (Reuters)

AMMAN (Reuters) ? The Arab League rejected a request by Damascus to amend plans for a 500-strong monitoring mission to Syria, and President Bashar al-Assad said he would not bow to international pressure to stop a crackdown against protesters.

Within hours of Assad ignoring a deadline to halt the bloody crackdown, residents said two rocket-propelled grenades hit a major ruling party building in Damascus Sunday, the first such reported attack by insurgents inside the capital.

Confronted since March by street demonstrations against 41 years of rule by his family, Assad said he had no choice but to pursue his crackdown on unrest because his foes were armed.

"The conflict will continue and the pressure to subjugate Syria will continue. Syria will not bow down," he told Britain's Sunday Times newspaper.

The Arab League, alarmed at the mounting death toll in Syria, rejected Damascus's request to alter a plan for the fact-finding mission, which would include military personnel and human rights experts.

"The additions requested by the Syrian counterpart affect the heart of the protocol and fundamentally change the nature of the mission," Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby said in a letter to the Syrian government.

Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem said the plan as it stood compromised the country's sovereignty but Damascus had not rejected the mission

Moualem said the proposed mission had "pervasive jurisdiction that reaches the level of ... violating Syrian sovereignty" and that he would send the Arab League a letter with questions about its role.

"We will reply to the Arab League secretary general by responsibly presenting a number of queries," he told a televised news conference in the Syrian capital.

ARAB LEAGUE DEADLINE

The Cairo-based League had given Damascus three days from a meeting on November 16 to abide by a deal to withdraw military forces from restive cities, start talks between the government and opposition and pave the way for an observer team.

It was not immediately clear what action the Arab League would take after the deadline passed unheeded by Damascus. The pan-Arab body had threatened sanctions for non-compliance, and it has already suspended Syria's membership.

"Although the time-frame has ended, there have been no meetings or calls for meetings except at the level of delegations (to the League)," a representative of one Arab state at the League told Reuters.

In a statement, the League said it remained committed to a peaceful, Arab-engineered solution to the Syrian upheaval, touched off by other Arab popular revolts that have overthrown the autocratic leaders of Egypt, Tunisia and Libya this year.

Syrian authorities blame the violence on foreign-backed armed groups which they say have killed some 1,100 troops and police. By a United Nations account, more than 3,500 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the unrest.

Assad signaled no retreat from his iron-fist policy in a video released after his forces killed 17 more protesters on Saturday.

"The only way is to search for the armed people, chase the armed gangs, prevent the entry of arms and weapons from neighboring countries, prevent sabotage and enforce law and order," he said in footage published on the Sunday Times website.

Assad said there would be elections in February or March when Syrians would vote for a parliament to create a new constitution and that would include provision for a presidential ballot.

An opposition group, the Syrian National Council, said it envisaged a transitional period lasting up to one-and-a-half years if Assad was toppled.

But some prominent Assad opponents said more work was needed on uniting the opposition to bring about his downfall.

LATEST VIOLENCE

Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said troops manning roadblocks in Homs fired on residential areas and wounded three protesters.

In the nearby town of Talbiseh, government forces delivered the bodies of two men arrested last month and in Idlib another two civilians were killed in military operations, the British-based group said.

The Syrian Free Army, comprising army defectors and based in neighboring Turkey, claimed responsibility for the attack on the Baath Party building in Damascus.

There was no independent verification of the claim and Moualem denied that any attack had taken place. But a witness said security police blocked off the square where the building was located and reported seeing smoke rising from it and fire trucks in the area.

"The attack was just before dawn and the building was mostly empty. It seems to have been intended as a message to the regime," said the witness, declining to be identified.

Syrian authorities have barred most independent journalists from entering the country during the revolt, making it difficult to verify accounts from activists and officials.

It was the second reported hit on a high-profile target in a week, underscoring a growing challenge to Assad - who blames "armed terrorist acts" for the unrest - from a nascent insurgency alongside mostly peaceful protests that have persisted despite the intensifying crackdown.

Assad, who inherited power from his father in 2000, is a member of the Alawite minority community, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam that dominates the state, the army and security apparatus in the majority Sunni Muslim country of 20 million.

The Syrian Free Army said the attack was a response to the refusal of Damascus to release tens of thousands of political prisoners and return troops to barracks, as called for by the plan agreed between the Arab League and Damascus.

Non-Arab Turkey, once an ally of Assad, is also taking an increasingly tough attitude to Damascus.

Turkish newspapers said Saturday Ankara had contingency plans to create no-fly or buffer zones to protect civilians in neighboring Syria if the bloodshed worsens.

Is Russia's malfunctioning Martian moon probe dangerous? [VIDEO]

If controllers are unable to repair Russia's Phobos-Grunt probe, which was intended to fly to a moon of Mars but is instead stranded in Earth's orbit, it will eventually crash back to Earth. The probe contains toxic flues as well as a small amount of radioactive material.?

Russia raced on Thursday to salvage a spacecraft bound for a moon of Mars that is stranded in the Earth's orbit, with just days left before the window closes on its first interplanetary mission in 15 years.

So far Russian controllers have failed to establish contact with the $163-million, unmanned probe, leaving little hope of recovering the ambitious mission that was to reassert Russia's place at the front lines of space exploration.

Following the launch from Russia's Baikonur launch pad in Kazakhstan early on Wednesday, the Phobos-Grunt probe is stuck in a dangerously low orbit, creating a drag that could eventually send it crashing back to Earth.

Russia's space agency said it had at least three days to try to fix the problem and steer the craft on to its correct path, and will make another attempt when it passes over Baikonur later today, a spokesman said.

Failure so soon after lift off in the three-year mission to bring back soil -- "grunt" in Russian -- from the Martian moon Phobos would be a major blow to the pride of the Russian space industry, adding to a humiliating series of setbacks.

"So far all efforts to communicate with the craft have been unsuccessful," lead mission scientist Alexander Zakharov of Moscow's Space Research Institute told Reuters.

"They are trying everything including visual methods to try to assess what is wrong with it, but of course the situation doesn't inspire much hope."

Experts say the post-launch problems are linked to the craft's on board flight computer, which failed to fire two engine burns to send it on its trajectory toward Mars.

There is a small chance the software could be reprogrammed, if controllers can link with the craft. But if the troubles are hardware related, the mission is likely lost, Zakharov and other industry sources said.

Russia is relying on a single ground site to try to reach the craft once every few hours along its orbit.

"In my opinion Phobos-Grunt is lost," Vladimir Uvarov, a former chief Russian military expert on space, told the state-run Rossiiskaya Gazeta.

China also could be disappointed after entrusting its first interplanetary Mars satellite, Yinghuo-1, to piggyback on the mission.

Phobos-Grunt is also carrying bacteria, plant seeds and tiny animals known as water bears, part of a U.S. study to see if they could survive beyond the Earth's protective bubble.

The plan was for Phobos-Grunt to reach Mars' orbit next year, touch down on the larger of its two tiny moons in 2013, collect a sample from the surface and fly back to Earth in 2014.

Dust from Phobos, scientist say, would shed light on the genesis of the solar system and Mars' enduring mysteries.

If it is lost, it will join a long string of over a dozen Soviet and Russian missions to fail en route to Mars, while U.S. rovers have logged hundreds of hours on the Red Planet.

When the first post-Soviet Mars-96 probe broke up over the Pacific, it was seen as a proof of the industry's deterioration after a generation of brain drain and crimped budgets.

NASA will launch a $2.5 billion rover designed to assess the planet's suitability for life later this month, toward the end of a launch window for Mars flights that comes every 780 days.

If Phobos-Grunt cannot be bounced out of orbit, the massive craft will eventually crash back to Earth with a full payload of toxic hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide fuel and small cargo of radioactive cobalt-57.

It is unclear how much of it will survive the fiery plunge through the atmosphere.

Missouri City Finance Department earns State, National Honors for ...

In recognition of the city?s excellent fiscal practices and policies, the Missouri City Finance Department has earned two new honors.

The gold Leadership Circle Award from the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts salutes the City?s ?transparency in financial, audit and budget reporting to residents,? said Finance Director Wes Vela. ?We value financial accountability and an important service we provide to citizens is the online posting of the annual budget, annual financial report and check register.? The City Budget features key services and programs; the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report highlights details on the City?s financial condition and the Check Register shows how City funds are spent.

As of Nov. 4, 95 Texas cities have received a 2011 Leadership Award; 60 earned gold status. The program was started in 2009 to acknowledge local governments statewide that excel in setting and meeting high standards for financial transparency online. It commends cities that ?open their books to the public; provide clear, consistent pictures of spending and share information in user-friendly formats that allow taxpayers to easily find more information.?

This was the ?Show Me? City?s first year applying for the program and due to ?our strong economic management standards we achieved the highest level award,? which is reserved for municipalities that are setting the bar for transparency actions, Vela said. City Council Members recognized the accomplishment during their Nov. 7 meeting.

In October, the Finance Department received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada for the 27th consecutive year. The distinction is for the fiscal year ending July 2011 and represents the highest form of recognition in accounting for the comprehensive annual financial report. ?What the auditors are looking for is not only financial accuracy but also compliance with procedures that are in place because they have to rely on those procedures being done,? Vela said, explaining the auditor review process. City Council Members recognized the accomplishment during their Oct. 17 meeting.

To view the City?s financial documents, citizens can visit www.missouricitytx.gov and click on ?Financial Transparency? under Hot Topics. A complete list of Texas cities qualifying for the award can be found at www.window.state.tx.us/comptrol/checkup/.

Penn State names new acting athletic director amid scandal (Reuters)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa (Reuters) ? Penn State named a new acting athletic director on Wednesday as the university continues to respond to the child sex abuse scandal involving a former assistant football coach.

The school said David M. Joyner, a graduate of the school and a member of its board of trustees, would assume responsibility for the university's athletic department, which has been rocked by the allegations involving Jerry Sandusky.

Sandusky, a former defensive coordinator with the football team once considered a likely successor to legendary coach Joe Paterno, was arrested two weeks ago and now faces charges he sexually abused eight young boys over a 15-year period.

Google Music vs. iTunes (ContributorNetwork)

Google has just announced the launch of Google Music, the company's answer to iTunes. Except that where iTunes is designed for Mac, Windows and i-Gadgets, Google Music works on Android, Mac, and Linux and Windows PCs. (A web app is available for iPhone and iPad, which basically means that you can visit the website and play your music through that.)

So what are the other differences between the two services? In a nutshell, Google Music has fewer songs in its catalog, but lets you upload your whole library and listen on any device for free, a feature that Apple charges for. Google's also going all-out with exclusives and extras, like free tracks. On the downside, its service is only available in the United States, and -- again -- there's no official iPhone app yet.

Here's a more detailed rundown of what Google Music has going for it versus iTunes:

Online sync is free

If you already have a big music library, Google Music will let you upload it and keep an online backup, plus listen to all your songs on any Internet-connected device you own. The only catches are that there's a limit of 20,000 songs total, and DRMed songs -- songs with copy protection -- can't be uploaded. (Although some people are apparently having trouble with Windows Media files even when they aren't DRMed, and downloading songs that you've bought from Google can be a bit of a pain.)

Apple offers iCloud sync for all the music you've bought through iTunes, but it's only for the music that you've bought through iTunes. A new Apple service called iTunes Match lets you do this for your other songs too, but it costs $24.99 per year to use.

Share songs on Google+

You can share a song or album that you're listening to on Google+, and all your friends can listen to it once for free. Naturally, this only works on Google+ and not Facebook.

Apple has its own social network called iTunes Ping that you can share tracks on, but your friends can only listen to the normal 30-second sample ... and they probably aren't using Ping to begin with.

Freebies and extras vs. a larger catalog

Google is offering a "free song of the day," plus a selection of free tracks and exclusives from major artists. Song previews are 90 seconds long, instead of 30 seconds long like in iTunes, and it costs only $25 to set up your own shop in its "Artist Hub" if you're a musician yourself.

The downside? Of the four major record labels, Google was only able to sign Sony, EMI and Universal, leaving Warner Bros.' catalog on iTunes for the time being. Although if you're concerned about the Internet censorship bill that the record labels are sponsoring, that may not be too big a disadvantage for you.

Congress pushes back on healthier school lunches (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Congress is fighting to keep pizza and french fries on school lunch lines, picking apart an Obama administration proposal to make school lunches healthier.

A spending bill released late Monday would unravel school lunch standards proposed by the Agriculture Department earlier this year, forcing USDA to pull back an attempt to limit potatoes on the lunch line, delaying limits on sodium and delaying a requirement to boost whole grains.

The spending bill also would allow tomato paste on pizzas to be counted as a vegetable, as it is now. The department's proposed guidelines would have attempted to prevent that.

The changes had been requested by food companies that produce frozen pizzas, the salt industry and potato growers. Some conservatives in Congress have called the push for healthier foods an overreach, saying the government shouldn't be telling children what to eat.

In a bill summary released Monday, Republicans on the House Appropriations Committee said the changes would "prevent overly burdensome and costly regulations and ... provide greater flexibility for local school districts to improve the nutritional quality of meals."

House Republicans had urged USDA to completely rewrite the standards in their version of the bill passed in June. The Senate last month voted to block the potato limits in their version. Neither version included the language on tomato paste, sodium or whole grains, which was added by House-Senate negotiators on the bill.

School districts had also objected to some of the requirements, saying they go too far. Schools have long taken broad instructions from the government on what they can serve in federally subsidized meals that are served free or at reduced price to low-income children. But some schools have balked at government attempts to tell them exactly what foods they can't serve.

The school lunch proposal was based on 2009 recommendations by the Institute of Medicine, the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences. When the guidelines were proposed in January, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the effort was necessary to stem the tide of childhood obesity and reduce future health care costs.

Nutrition advocate Margo Wootan of the Center for Science in the Public Interest said the changes proposed by Congress will prevent schools from serving a wider array of vegetables. Children already get enough pizza and potatoes, she says. It would also slow efforts to make pizzas ? a longtime standby on school lunch lines ? healthier, with whole grain crusts and lower levels of sodium.

"They are making sure that two of the biggest problems in the school lunch program, pizza and french fries, are untouched," she said.

A group of retired generals advocating for healthier school lunches also criticized the spending bill. Mission: Readiness has called poor nutrition in school lunches a national security issue because obesity is the leading medical disqualifier for military service.

"We are outraged that Congress is seriously considering language that would effectively categorize pizza as a vegetable in the school lunch program," Amy Dawson Taggart, the director of the group, said in a letter to members of Congress before the final plan was released. "It doesn't take an advanced degree in nutrition to call this a national disgrace."

The school lunch provisions are part of a final House-Senate compromise on a $182 billion measure would fund the day-to-day operations of the departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Justice, Transportation and Housing and Urban Development. Both the House and the Senate are expected to vote on the bill this week and send it to President Barack Obama.

Silibinin stops production of COX2 and iNOS

Tissue with wound-like conditions allows tumors to grow and spread. In mouse lung cancer cells, treatment with silibinin, a major component of milk thistle, removed the molecular billboards that signal these wound-like conditions and so stopped the spread of these lung cancers, according to a recent study published in the journal Molecular Carcinogenesis.

Though the natural extract has been used for more than 2,000 years, mostly to treat disorders of the liver and gallbladder, this is one of the first carefully controlled and reported studies to find benefit.

Here is how it works:

Basically, in a cell there can be a chain of signals, one leading to the next, to the next, and eventually to an end product. And so if you would like to eliminate an end product, you may look to break a link in the signaling chain that leads to it. The end products COX2 and iNOS are enzymes involved with the inflammatory response to perceived wounds both can aid tumor growth. Far upstream in the signaling chain that leads to these unwanted enzymes are STAT1 and STAT3. These transcription factors allow the blueprint of DNA to bind with proteins that continue the signal cascade, eventually leading to the production of harmful COX2 and iNOS.

Stop STAT1 and STAT3 and you break the chain that leads to COX2 and iNOS and the growth of lung tumors along with them.

"This relatively nontoxic substance a derivative of milk thistle, called silibinin was able to inhibit the upstream signals that lead to the expression of COX2 and iNOS," says Alpna Tyagi, PhD, investigator at the University of Colorado Cancer Center and member of the Agarwal Lab at the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

In addition, Tyagi and collaborators compared the effects of silibinin to drugs currently in clinical trials for lung cancer. Would drugs that target other signaling pathways other linked chains similarly cut into the production of COX2 and iNOS?

It turned out that inhibiting the chains of JAK1/2 and MEK in combination and also inhibiting the signaling pathways of EGFR and NF-kB in combination blocked the ability of STAT1 and STAT3 to trap the energy they needed to eventually signal COX2 and iNOS production.

Compared to these multi-million dollar drugs, naturally-occurring silibinin blocked not only the expression of COX2 and iNOS, but also the migration of existing lung cancer cells.

"What we showed is that STAT1 and STAT3 may be promising therapeutic targets in the treatment of lung cancer, no matter how you target them," Tyagi says. "And also that naturally-derived products like silibinin may be as effective as today's best treatments."

Aerial 3D: Amazing System Shows 3D Objects In Mid-Air, With No Screen (Video)

burton 3d featSince 2006, Tokyo-based Burton has been working on Aerial 3D, a technology that makes it possible to produce pictures in 3D in mid-air or underwater - without using a screen (that's what I call "True 3D Technology" indeed). Burton says their laser-based system is the only one of its kind. The current system projects objects at 50,000 dots per second and with a frame rate of 10-15. The Aerial 3D works by focusing laser light, producing "plasma excitation from the oxygen and nitrogen in the air".

(AP) ? While Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart have gone round-for-round in their race for the Sprint Cup title, Kasey Kahne has quietly turned his performance up a notch outside of the championship spotlight.

Kahne's performance the last nine weeks has trailed only the two title contenders, and on Sunday, he finally got a win to show for his efforts.

Kahne snapped an 81-race winless streak with his victory at Phoenix International Raceway, where Edwards and Stewart finished second and third to keep the title race tight headed into next weekend's season finale.

"If I'm in a racecar, I want to do the best that I can," Kahne said, crediting crew chief Kenny Francis for giving him strong Toyotas that have allowed him "to perform with and run with Carl and Tony, who have been probably the two best."

They've been the only two drivers better than Kahne, and one of them will officially unseat five-time defending NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson next Sunday at Homestead.

Edwards will take a three-point lead over Stewart into the 36th and final race of the season, marking the closest championship battle since the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship format made its debut in 2004.

The two were nearly giddy discussing the title race as they sat side-by-side in the post-race news conference.

"As far as I'm concerned, it's a dead heat going in there," said Stewart. "I want to go to Homestead tomorrow and start. I want tomorrow to be Friday. I'm pumped up, I'm excited about it and ready to go."

So was Edwards.

"This is going to be a battle. I truly believe it's going to be a good race," Edwards said. "That place is magical for us. I really enjoy going there. I hope it comes down to the fastest guy winning the race."

Stewart, winner of four Chase races this season, dominated Sunday at Phoenix and led 160 of the 312 laps. But he had to pit for gas with 18 laps remaining, and was forced to work his way back to the front. He needed a late pass of Jeff Burton to finish third, right behind Edwards.

"I wasn't going to give him the spot. He earned it and he got it," Burton said.

It was a critical pass, as it picked up another point for Stewart and kept his deficit at three points.

"We had an awesome day. We came up two spots shy. I don't know how you could have asked for a better day," he said. "We led the most laps, we were on the same pace we were last week, just to have a perfect day. Just fought as hard as we could all day."

Edwards did, too, despite having to chase Stewart most of the race. He's not faltered once with the two-time champion bearing down on him, and he'll go to Homestead with his first Cup championship in reach.

Edwards is a two-time Homestead winner and drives for Roush Fenway Racing, which has won seven of the last nine races at Homestead. Stewart, trying to become the first owner/driver since Alan Kulwicki in 1992 to win the championship, won the first two Cup races at Homestead in 1999 and 2000.

"It's the best points battle I've been a part of at this level, so it's fun for me," Edwards said. "I still don't understand why we're both running so good. It's pretty neat. Seems like subconsciously we're both able to dig down and our teams are able to give us what we need and everybody has been performing at a high level.

"It's been neat that this battle has brought out the best in us."

Sunday officially marked the end of Johnson's reign: He finished 14th and was mathematically eliminated from title contention.

"It's been one hell of a run," he posted on Twitter shortly after the race.

Kahne, meanwhile, won for the first time since Atlanta in 2009, and it comes in his next-to-last race with Red Bull Racing. He's moving to Hendrick Motorsports next season, and Red Bull is pulling out of NASCAR.

His win was only the second for Red Bull, which came into NASCAR in 2007 amid much fanfare but never delivered.

Kahne, who won in a brand new car, said it's a shame Red Bull is leaving.

"I wouldn't say there's anyone out there that's building better cars at this time. The Red Bull guys are doing an awesome job and they haven't given up," he said. "It's tough to hear it's shutting down in eight days. Over the last three months, you have one of the top five cars in NASCAR shutting down and that's crazy."

Burton finished fourth and was followed by Ryan Newman.

AJ Allmendinger was sixth, and David Reutimann, told two weeks ago he was losing his job at Michael Waltrip Racing, was seventh.

Marcos Ambrose finished eighth and was followed by Paul Menard and Clint Bowyer.

Kyle Busch, racing again after NASCAR parked him at Texas last weekend for intentionally wrecking Ron Hornaday Jr., worked his way up to third before his engine failed. He finished 36th.

"It's just devastating," Busch said. "To go through turmoil like this, all you can do is group together and pull through it and try to persevere and move on."

Busch, who started the Chase tied with Kevin Harvick as the top seed, will almost certainly finish 12th in the final standings and won't be included in the season-ending awards ceremony held in his hometown, Las Vegas.

His older brother, Kurt, didn't fare any better at Phoenix. He ran out of gas while leading, was flagged for speeding on pit road during his stop to get fuel, and wound up 22nd.

"What an unbelievable turn of events," Kurt Busch said. "We worked our butts off all race trying to get track position and just couldn't cash our ticket in late in the race."

The race was also marked by another incident between Brian Vickers and Matt Kenseth, who tangled two races ago at Martinsville. Kenseth was wrecked when Vickers ran into the back of him, an act Kenseth called deliberate. He also wondered why NASCAR didn't punish Vickers the way Kyle Busch was at Texas.

"You have someone that has been telling everybody for four or five weeks that as soon as he got a chance at a fast race track he was going to make it hurt and wipe us out and they (NASCAR) do nothing about it," Kenseth said. "It was so premeditated it just surprises me that they didn't do anything. I am disappointed but I expected it."

Vickers denied it was intentional.

"If he wants to doubt us, that's fine," Vickers said. "He wrecked me at Martinsville, he got wrecked here, but it actually wasn't (payback). I'm not saying I wasn't going to pay him back, but I'm just saying that wasn't it."

Mount Your Kinect Above Your TV or Higher to Make It Work in Tight Spaces [Video Games]

Mount Your Kinect Above Your TV or Higher to Make It Work in Tight Spaces The Microsoft Kinect is a great gaming accessory for motion and exercise games, but if you have a small living room or apartment, it can be pretty tough to use. One easy way to put some distance between you and the lens so your Kinect sees you easier is to mount it on the ceiling or in another high place over the television, instead of right on top or below.

This tip comes from the folks at Unplggd, who note that moving your Kinect over the TV looking down over the living room is a good way to compensate for a limited amount of space between you and the TV screen, if you have a small living room. They also make a few other suggestions, like picking up a $29.99 Nyko Zoom, and finally marking the spot on the floor where the Kinect works best so you don't have to struggle with it the next time you use it.

What are some of your suggestions for making a Kinect work in a limited space? Share your tips in the comments below.

UFC on Fox postfight: White tells critics to ?shut up?

UFC on Fox postfight: White tells critics to ?shut up?UFC president Dana White had to know what was coming.

A 64-second knockout of Cain Velasquez by Junior dos Santos in the one-fight UFC debut on Fox was going to draw strong reaction from both ends of the spectrum.

But 30 minutes after the Fox show ended, the UFC president had already heard enough negativity and seen too many critical comments on Twitter.

So White lashed out during the UFC on Fox postfight press conference.

"For anyone to [expletive] about this fight because they didn't get to see [this fight or] that fight ... shut up!? You should've bought tickets if you wanted to see all the fights," White said. "And you don't like to watch them on Facebook? Seriously, shut up."

White went on to explain that too many of the hardcore fight fans, who were the?loudest critics of the one-fight format, have a narrow-minded view of the sport.

"Every weirdo comes from everywhere, [talking] about how bad fighting is and joining the 'Coalition of I Have Nothing Better To Do With My Life,'" said White. "These are the stories we have to tell to mainstream America. Because most of us in this room live in this bubble called MMA. It's a world of triangle chokes and arm bars, all the [expletive] people have never heard of. They don't understand it. They don't know what it is. We have to ease people into this, so that's what we did tonight."

White said it was also important to expose the new fans to the kind of fighters featured in the heavyweight title fight. Junior dos Santos grew up in a poor city in Brazil but never turned to crime. Instead, he sold ice cream and newspapers as a kid and turned to fighting for discipline. Velasquez, a first generation American from Mexican immigrants, eventually made his way from junior college to Arizona State, where he earned a degree in education.

"We have to educate people. We had to show features about these two guys tonight. They're two great athletes. They're two great human beings," White said. "We explained what this sport is and who these people are who are involved in it. They're not what you think they are."

At the end of the press conference when White had cooled down a bit he made sure to thank the media in attendance who've covered the sport since it's infancy.

"I want to thank of all you guys, the guys who've been around for a long time. [You've been] working hard in the sport, just as hard as we have. Going to podunk here and there and on the same travel schedule we're on. I appreciate you very much."

One can assume he was also talking about the fans who helped?to turn the?sport from an Internet sensation to one that truly arrived on the U.S. sport scene on network TV on a Saturday night.
