ALPHA Pregnancy ? Choosing The Right Obstetrician To Birth Your ...

However, becoming pregnant comes with so many new responsibilities, and a huge amount of information that must be learned. At times it is quite confusing. However, the information here can give you knowledge so you won?t have to be overwhelmed, but can feel in control.

Even if you have not experienced heartburn before, you may during pregnancy. Suggestions to avoid this are to stay away from carbonated drinks, chocolate, citrus fruits and juices because of their acidic content, and spicy, fatty or fried foods.

While pregnant, your body should be supported, while you sleep. You can buy ?pregnancy pillows? in most stores or online. These special pillows are made to support pregnant women?s entire bodies while they?re sleeping. In lieu of one of those special pillows, a standard pillow can suffice. Try sleeping with a pillow under your one knee and your stomach.

Human skin is very elastic, but there is of course a limit to its stretchability. As your skin is stretched during pregnancy, it can become itchy. When trying to make the situation more bearable, it is important not to bathe in hot water. The hot water can strip the skin of naturally forming oils and leave it itchier and more dry. Moisturize with a heavy product, like cocoa butter or Vaseline. Remember to wear comfortable, loosely fitting apparel, and stop scratching!

Don?t be too proud to ask for assistance when lifting heavy objects. Heavy lifting has been known to cause miscarriages or extra stress to the baby, and can also cause a back ache. As an alternative, have a friend or relative life the object for you and ask your doctor how much weight you should be lifting.

If you intent to adopt a healthier lifestyle and more nutritious eating habits, invite a friend or family member to join you in your efforts. By doing this, you will have a much easier process, which won?t be as stressful on you, your baby and the relationship you have.

If conceiving is something you are attempting to do, then learn how to monitor and track your cycles. Knowing when you?re likely to be ovulating will help you by scheduling the best times to get pregnant. This will help you find a precise due date since you will be able to tell during which period of time you got pregnant.

Dehydration can be a big concern during pregnancy if you have excessive nausea, or if you get sick with an illness that causes vomiting and diarrhea. The risk of dehydration from diarrhea can complicate your pregnancy or cause you to have to spend time in the hospital.

Many natural home remedies can help your nausea and heartburn. While over-the-counter treatments can be very effective, a great deal of them aren?t designed with pregnant women in mind, and can have negative side effects. Ask your family physician if he or she can recommend any home remedies that would help, and if he or she doesn?t know, you can ask your pharmacist.

As you can see from the tips above, there is so much to know about all the changes and challenges of pregnancy. By applying the advice you have learned in this article, you can make sure that your pregnancy goes smoothly.

Gold Fields strike ends, 1,500 sacked as South Africa trouble simmers

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African workers officially ended a month-long strike at major bullion producer Gold Fields on Friday but there was still no end in sight for wildcat walkouts that have paralysed other gold and platinum producers.

More than 80,000 miners have downed tools in the resource-rich country since August in often violent strikes over pay and working conditions that are hitting growth and investor confidence in Africa's biggest economy and raising questions about President Jacob Zuma's leadership.

Nearly 50 people have died in labour strife since August, including 34 striking miners shot dead on August 16 at Lonmin's Marikana mine in the deadliest security incident since the end of white-minority rule.

Thousands of Lonmin workers staged a one-day walkout on Thursday to protest against the arrests of colleagues who are suspected of murdering rival labour leaders. Lonmin said on Friday it was back to normal operations.

Gold Fields, the world's No. 4 producer, said about 11,000 workers, threatened with dismissal if they did not return by Thursday, have returned to work at its KDC West operations in Carletonville, 40 km (25 miles) west of Johannesburg.

"At KDC West the strike is officially over. The 1,500 employees who did not report for work before Thursday's deadline were dismissed but have until midday on Friday to appeal their dismissal," said company spokesman Sven Lunsche.

On Thursday, all of the 9,000 workers at its Beatrix mine in the Free State province returned and Lunsche said the remaining 8,500 on strike at its KDC East operations would be issued an ultimatum "anytime now".

"The raiding of hostels and disarming of strikers gave workers the confidence to return to work," said Lunsche.

AngloGold Ashanti, the world's No. 3 gold producer, is relying on negotiations at the Chamber of Mines to end the strikes at its South African operations.

Gold companies represented by the chamber on Thursday tweaked a proposal to lift the pay of the lowest paid workers in a bid to end the illegal strikes.

The labour unrest has hit at the heart of the post-apartheid economic structure where the ruling African National Congress and its union allies would insure a steady supply of labour for industry in return for moderate pay increases.

Strikers have often said union bosses are more concerned about keeping close ties with politicians and company bosses than protecting workers in mine shafts.

"Harmony's Kusasalethu is still on an unprotected strike. Other operations in Harmony are still in operation," said Harmony Gold Mining spokeswoman Henrika Basterfield.

A month-long strike at Anglo American Platinum is no closer to ending. The company has sacked 12,000 at its Rustenburg operations.

CEOs' rosy spin downplays weak earnings

A flurry of disappointing earnings from companies like McDonald's are fueling the selloff, with David Sowerby, Loomis Sayles & Co.; and CNBC's Mandy Drury and Rick Santelli.

By Ben Berkowitz , Reuters

NEW YORK ??Corporate America has been talking a good game this earnings season, but a closer look shows the results are not nearly as strong as CEO optimism might lead investors to believe.?

In fact, a number of companies are coming up short on either earnings or revenue as measured against Wall Street estimates, even as their leaders try to paint a picture of steady returns and solid prospects for 2013. Some investors say earnings expectations have been managed so low they are easy to beat, even if sales come up short.?

The 24 hours through Friday morning ? the busiest period yet in this earnings season ??serve as a good example of the phenomenon.?

Between Thursday morning and Friday morning, nearly 40 companies in the S&P 500 reported quarterly results.

Some, like insurer Travelers Cos Inc

and the railroad operator Union Pacific Corp , reported record figures, born mostly of pricing strength in their businesses.

But more companies had quarters like those reported by Internet search heavyweight Google Inc or fast-food chain Chipotle Mexican Grill In, whose core markets appear to be slowing quickly, much to the consternation of shareholders.

Even though a majority of S&P companies have beat expectations overall this season, 79 percent of the S&P companies that reported results in the last day missed earnings and/or revenue estimates.

It is a further confirmation that USA Inc is facing a challenging environment that does not look likely to turn better anytime soon.

As for the CEO comments, Reuters analyzed the news releases issued by those companies, specifically isolating the lead quote from the chief executive in each one.

Some were brief, just a sentence or two. Many were lengthy paragraphs. All totaled, they expended 2,669 words explaining how their corporations did in the last three months.

Phrases in the releases point to a general sense of well-being that might be at odds with the actual results.

Excluding generic words, the most common phrases were "we made good progress," "we are well positioned," "we are pleased with" and "we are pleased to."

In fact, there was not a single four-word phrase anywhere in any of the reports that indicated a negative sentiment. Experienced investors are not necessarily surprised by the behavior, the numbers notwithstanding.

"I think this is business as usual," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank in Chicago. "You tamp down your expectations, you beat them, then you thump your chest."

Investors are growing increasingly frustrated by the drum beat of weak figures, seemingly without explanation. General Electric Co was the latest example on Friday morning.?

"There it is again, this whole revenue story. They hit on the earnings number, but revenues keep missing. That is the story that we are hearing across the line," said Ken Polcari, managing director of ICAP Equities in New York.

It "further solidifies the same story that people are concerned. And although these companies are beating these numbers, the numbers are much lower so the beat is not that difficult. But clearly they are all missing on the revenue line, which is a concern."

The beat rate for revenue forecasts so far this season is 41.4 percent, trailing both the 55 percent average over the past four quarters and the long-term average of 62 percent, according to Thomson Reuters data.

But if they are actually doing that badly, they certainly are not talking about it.

Breaking it down excluding generic words, the most common word was "growth." It appeared some 30 times.

GE talked about continuing to "execute on our growth strategy." Huntington Bancshares Inc was pleased that results "reflect steady growth in a number of key strategic areas." Tool maker Snap-on Inc reported "continued progress along our defined runways for coherent growth."

To be sure, not everyone was so rosy. Some companies acknowledged a lack of forward momentum or challenges in expanding in the current environment.

Among them, Boston Scientific Corp is "focused on executing our strategy to drive this organization back to revenue growth," while Capital One Financial Corp said it could sustain strong returns, "even in an environment with low industry growth."

After "growth," the next-most common non-generic word was "strong," which appeared 19 times. In contrast, some derivation of the word "weak" was used only six times.

Lower down the list, "progress" showed up six times ? and despite the shaky economy, "uncertainty" turned up only once.

That said, some corporate chiefs tried to embrace their circumstances and at least reassure investors that, current challenges notwithstanding, there is reason to think things will get better ? someday, anyway.

"While our sales momentum and current financial results reflect today's challenging conditions, we continue to see significant long-term opportunities for brand McDonald's and remain confident in the underlying strength of our business model," McDonald's Corp CEO Don Thompson said.

Author spills brains about zombie survival ? The North Wind

The living dead will be taking over the University Center for the night on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Acclaimed writer Max Brooks will be presenting a lecture entitled, ?10 Lessons for Surviving a Zombie Attack.? Students might even pick up some real-life survival strategies along the way.

If Brooks? name sounds familiar, there?s a good reason for that; he?s the son of Mel Brooks, writer and director of ?Blazing Saddles,? ?Young Frankenstein? and ?Spaceballs.?

His mother, Anne Bancroft, is an actress best known for her roles as Annie Sullivan in ?The Miracle Worker? and Mrs. Robinson in ?The Graduate.?

Throughout Brooks own career, he?s worked as both an actor and a screenwriter, including writing for ?Saturday Night Live,? for which he won an Emmy.

But, if you had to summarize his career in one word, that word would almost certainly be ?zombies.? Two of Brooks? most popular books, ?The Zombie Survival Guide? and ?World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War,? provide an interesting perspective on the archetypal monsters. A third book, ?The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks,? was released in 2009.

Horror fans have been hugely enthusiastic about his books, sophomore Abby Johnsen said.

?I?m a huge zombie nut, and that sparked my interest when I first saw ?The Zombie Survival Guide,?? Johnsen said. ?So I read it, and I loved it.?

?10 Lessons for Surviving a Zombie Attack? serves as a live extension of ?The Zombie Survival Guide? and ?World War Z.? For more than an hour and a half, Brooks will speak about the topic of zombies, focusing on how one could deal with a real-world zombie apocalypse. This is Brooks? second visit to NMU.

?His first visit was so popular that we decided to wait a few years and invite him back,? said Rachel Harris, associate director of the Center for Student Enrichment.

Senior marketing major Roy Owensby, who attended Brooks? first NMU visit, said the lecture wasn?t strictly for entertainment.

?Brooks made sure to point out that whether you think this is a joke or not, it?s not. It?s serious,? Owensby said.

Another one of the interesting things about learning hypothetical survival strategies for a zombie apocalypse is that several of them can also help out in actual catastrophes, Harris said. As a result, the lecture offers you a chance to learn about more than just a pop culture phenomenon.

However, when it comes to an event like this, pop culture is inevitably going to be a factor. In the event of a zombie apocalypse, there were a variety of scenarios offered.

?I?d definitely shave off my hair,? Johnsen said. ?I?d probably band together with a group of people, get as many supplies as I could, and keep moving.?

Owensby was similarly ready.

?I?d probably go to someplace remote yet fortified with someone experienced with survival,? he said.

In contrast, Harris hadn?t given the matter much thought.

?Everyone who?s into zombies already has a plan, but I still need to think about mine,? Harris said. ?Be faster than the next guy, I guess.?

?10 Lessons for Surviving a Zombie Attack? begins at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free with an NMU ID, or $2 for members of the general public. For more information on the event, call Harris at (906) 227-6543.

Business Networking for Accountants: Choosing the Right Event ...

Business Networking for Accountants: How to Choose the Right Events

When it comes to networking your practice, it can become incredibly easy to allow yourself to get consumed by the number of networking events available to accounting professionals. While these events are of incredible importance to growing a client base and building business relationships in your community, they can also be quite demanding of time and energy.

So, how can you decide which events deserve priority over the others? The answer is fairly straightforward ? by beginning with an end goal in mind. Stay aware of what you intend to get out of each event you attend. Beyond that, is important to keep your networking opportunities as diverse as possible. If you find yourself attending events in which you meet the same members of a target industry, or worse, the same accountants, you are probably missing out on other networking opportunities.

Focus on the right types of events

One strategy is to research who will be at an event prior to committing. If you have the opportunity to attend a local charity event, do some digging and find out who attended last year, and who will be attending this year. You can even set up a Google Alert for that organization and have emails sent to you regarding everyone who lists participation in that organization in their online CV or companies that are sponsoring a particular event.

Once you decide on an event, make note of who you would like to meet, and focus on that goal for the event. Local charities and nonprofit organization events are of particular?attractiveness?because the goal of a non-profit or charity is to attract a wide reaching and diverse array of local businesses, and attending charity events leads to natural networking and can create a positive presence for your practice in the local perception.

Geographic diversity

It is also important to diversify your exposure to events on a local and a national level. If your practice has national appeal, attending industry conferences outside of your own state can bring a your practice exposure outside the shadow of your local competitive bubble, and can often put you in touch with valuable sources of advice and industry specialization.

Ultimately it is the most important to focus on why you are attending an event, what you hope to achieve at the event, and who you hope to meet as a result of attending. By approaching networking events with an objective mindset, you can easily trim the list of networking events on your calendar to just the most fruitful ones, and spend more time closing leads post-event rather than chasing inbound leads in the first place.
