DETROIT (AP) ? Factory workers at General Motors have voted overwhelmingly to approve a new four-year contract with the company that has profit-sharing instead of pay raises for most workers and promises thousands of new jobs.
The United Auto Workers union said Wednesday that 65 percent of production workers voted for the deal, while 63 percent of skilled trades workers such as electricians were in favor. Voting by GM's 48,500 blue-collar workers ended on Wednesday.
GM was the first company to reach a deal with the union, which is now negotiating with Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group LLC. The GM pact is a template for the other companies, but there will be differences. The deal sets the pay and benefits for more than 112,000 auto workers nationwide, and it also sets the bar for pay at foreign-owned auto plants in the U.S., auto parts supply companies and for other manufacturing businesses.
Under the deal, which runs through September of 2015, most of the workers won't get annual pay raises. But they'll get $5,000 signing bonuses, profit-sharing checks and other payments that total at least $11,500 during the next four years. GM also promised to add at least 5,100 jobs and reopen an assembly plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee.
Entry-level workers who now make a base wage of around $15.78 per hour will get 22 percent raises to $19.28. GM currently has about 1,900 entry-level workers who make about half the pay of longtime UAW members.
Pressure is now on for Ford and Chrysler to reach agreements with the union. A top Ford negotiator said Monday that he was optimistic about reaching a deal by the end of this week. UAW President Bob King is involved in the talks at Ford, the union has said.
Negotiations with Chrysler also are continuing.
King said in a statement that the union stopped GM from getting any more concessions and was able to improve health care benefits in the contract. GM and the union reached agreement on Sept. 16.

Charlie's not the only Sheen who's winning!
Charlie Sheen and ex-wife Denise Richards reunited Saturday to cheer on their 7-year-old daughter Sam at her soccer game. The former Two and a Half Men star, 46, enjoyed some quality time with his and Richards' other daughter Lola and the actress' new 3-month-old daughter Eloise.
PHOTOS: Charlie's epic year
"Just got back from Sami's soccer game," Richards, 40, tweeted Saturday. "She did great... Happy to see Charlie Sheen cheer her on. Proud parents!"
PHOTOS: More of Charlie's crazy controversies
Sheen replied to her tweet, adding: "Nothing better!"

The duo was married from 2002 to 2006 and have two daughters together: Sam, 7, and Lola, 6. Despite their rocky romantic history (including threats of violence and a now-resolved custody battle), Sheen and Richards are on good terms. "We talk every day," the actress told Us Weekly in July, adding that Sheen was "supportive" of her decision to adopt a third daughter.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is heading to the West Coast to raise money from liberal donors and try to sell his new jobs plan.
Obama has fundraisers events Sunday in two reliably Democratic states, Washington and California. He's expected to keep up his newly aggressive tone of taking Republicans head on.
That may be welcome news for party activists who've been discouraged by some of the president's compromises with the GOP.
Obama has a town hall-style event hosted by social networking site LinkedIn in California on Monday and ends the trip with a jobs speech in Denver.
Polling shows that Obama's approval ratings are sagging, but he probably doesn't risk losing Washington or California in 2012.
Still, supporters aren't as enthusiastic as they once were, something Obama will try to change.

It is no easy task to preserve the delicate balance that allows us to maintain a strong immune system that can defend us from harmful pathogens, but that is sensitive enough to correctly identify and spare our own cells. Therefore, it is not surprising that the mechanisms that underlie immune activation and tolerance are not completely understood. Now, a new research study published by Cell Press in the journal Immunity and available online on September 15th provides intriguing insight into the complex immune regulatory mechanisms that underlie immune tolerance.
Cells called Foxp3-expressing regulatory T cells, or "Treg cells," are a subpopulation of immune cells that suppress the immune system to maintain self tolerance. These regulatory "suppressor" cells have to recognize our own cells as "self" in order to turn off the effector arm of the immune system so that it does not attack our own healthy tissues and cause an autoimmune or inflammatory disease. There has been a lot of interest in Treg cells because it has been hypothesized that these cells might be useful for treating autoimmune disease or facilitating organ transplantation. "Foxp3 is a transcription factor that is important for Treg cell function," explains senior study author, Dr. Yisong Y. Wan, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "If we are going to fully understand immune tolerance and regulation, it is critical to understand how Treg and Foxp3 function are controlled."
Dr. Wan and colleagues were interested looking at a second transcription factor, GATA-3, best known as a master regulator of another type of immune cell. "GATA-3 plays multi-faceted roles of regulating immune function in a cell-type specific fashion," says Dr. Wan. "However, whether and how GATA-3 is involved in controlling Treg function was unknown." The researchers discovered that when GATA-3 was deleted from Treg cells, mice developed a spontaneous inflammatory disorder and that Treg cells were defective in their ability to suppress the immune system. They went on to show that GATA-3 controls Foxp3 expression by binding to a regulatory region in the Foxp3 gene and that defects in both GATA-3 and Foxp3 resulted in substantially impaired Treg cells.
Therefore, the investigators have shown that one transcription factor (GATA-3) can control the expression of another transcription factor (FoxP3) to drive functional differentiation of Treg cells. By evolutionarily engineering a multi-layered process of transcriptional regulation, nature has provided for the opportunity to finely tune the generation of Treg cells. "Our study provides novel insights into the modulation of Treg function, revealing an indispensible role of GATA-3 in regulating Treg function and immune tolerance," concludes Dr. Wan. "We suggest that GATA-3 expression in Treg cells is important for the modulation of Treg function and immune response, and thus needs to be considered in order to fully understand how protective (to clear pathogen) and pathogenic (to cause autoimmunity and inflammatory disease) immune responses are controlled."

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Netflix's decision to raise prices by as much as 60 percent is turning into a horror show.
The customer backlash against the higher rates, kicking in this month, has been much harsher than Netflix Inc. anticipated. That prompted management to predict Thursday that the company ?the largest U.S. video subscription service? will end September with 600,000 fewer U.S. customers than it had in June.
It will mark just the second time in 12 years that Netflix has lost subscribers from one quarter to the next. The last downturn occurred during 2007 when Netflix lost a mere 55,000 from March through June.
The current hemorrhaging exacerbated fears that Netflix is losing the magic touch that increased its stock 10-fold in the three years leading up to the company's July 12 announcement about its higher prices.
Since then, Netflix has turned into Wall Street's equivalent of a box-office flop. Its shares plunged $39.46, or about 19 percent, to close at $169.25 on Thursday, leaving Netflix's stock price more than 40 percent below where it stood before the company unveiled the higher prices. The cost to shareholders so far: more than $6 billion in paper losses.
It could get uglier if the worst-case scenarios play out. Netflix suffered another setback earlier this month when Starz Entertainment ended talks to renew the licensing rights to a key part of Netflix's video library for streaming over the Internet. The fallout from that decision will hit in March when Netflix will no longer be able to stream the popular mix of recently released movies and TV shows that it got from Starz, raising the specter of another onslaught of customer defections.
"Netflix isn't looking like it's as good a deal because their prices are getting higher and their content isn't getting any better," said Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, who thinks the company's shares could fall as low as $110. "It's like they have taken the beef away from the buffet."
The customer exodus still hasn't convinced Netflix to reverse its course and lower its prices as it did in 2007 when it was engaged in a cut-throat battle with Blockbuster Inc. In announcing its lowered subscriber forecasts Thursday, Netflix emphasized it consider its new prices to be "the right long-term strategic choice."
The new pricing structure was driven by Netflix's desire to build up its service that streams video over high-speed Internet connections, even at the risk of hurting the DVD-by-mail rentals that used to be its main business. Netflix management believes the convenience of Internet video is the main reason that it has added 17 million U.S. subscribers during the past three years, establishing the company as a major player in the entertainment industry.
As the streaming service took off, Hollywood studios and other video distributors such as Starz have been demanding higher fees for the licensing rights to their content ? a trend that caused Netflix to dig deeper into its subscribers' wallets.
Even with fewer subscribers, Netflix expects to bring in $10 million to $25 million more from its customers than during the July-September period than it did April-June.
Netflix revenue won't keep rising, though, if more subscribers flee. Pachter thinks that could still happen because some customers won't be billed at the higher rates until the end of the month.
Besides being more expensive, Netflix's new pricing structure is also more complicated for subscribers who want to stream and rent DVDs from the service.
Until Sept. 1, Netflix offered plans that bundled DVD rentals and unlimited video streaming for as little as $10 per month. Those options are now sold separately, resulting in a cost of at least $16 per month for people who want streaming and DVDs. Having both choices is appealing because Netflix's streaming library primarily consists of old TV shows and movies, leaving DVDs as the main way to see recently released films.
To hold down costs in a tough economy, millions of Netflix customers are either limiting their subscriptions to a streaming-only or DVD-only plan. Other customers are canceling their accounts to protest the new pricing scheme. Those canceling are following through on threats that were made on Facebook and Netflix's own blog after the higher prices were announced.
Despite the vitriolic reaction, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings still thought the company would be able to add subscribers. In late July, he issued a forecast that indicated Netflix would end September with 25 million U.S. subscribers, up from 24.6 million in June. That prediction was lowered Thursday to 24 million. The revision mostly reflects Netflix's expectation that it will have 800,000 fewer DVD-only subscribers than it previously thought.
Many of the people no longer renting DVDs from Netflix will get their discs elsewhere. That could be a boon for Redbox, which rents DVDs for $1 per night through 33,330 kiosks in supermarkets and other retailers, and Blockbuster, which still has 1,500 U.S. stores after emerging from bankruptcy protection under the ownership of Dish Network Corp. Investors are betting Redbox will be the main beneficiary; the shares of Redbox owner Coinstar surged $3.33, or more than 7 percent, to close at $48.55 on Thursday. Dish Network's shares edged up 11 cents to $25.82.
This could be an opportune time for would-be rivals to attack Netflix's streaming service too, BTIG Research analyst Richard Greenfield wrote in a Thursday blog post. Internet retailer Amazon.com Inc. launched a free streaming service for subscribers to its two-day shipping service earlier this year. Greenfield and other analysts believe Google Inc., already the owner of YouTube, is eager to expand its Internet video offerings to include more movies. One way Google could achieve that would be to buy Hulu.com, which has been put up by for sale by the television network owners that supply its video content.
"Netflix made a bad move, raising prices as much as they did," Pachter said.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) ? Gunmen opened fire on a school bus in the Pakistani city of Peshawar on Tuesday, killing at least three children and the driver, a police official said.
Fifteen children were wounded, he said. The children on the bus were around nine years old.
"First a rocket was fired but it didn't hit. Then gunmen opened fire," said Sahibzada Sajjad, deputy superintendent of police in Peshawar, where Taliban militants, who are close to al Qaeda, often carry out attacks.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
Pakistan's Taliban, also allies of militants in neighboring Afghanistan, are waging a campaign of mostly suicide bombings in a bid to topple the U.S.-backed government.
Al Qaeda have suffered several setbacks since U.S. special forces killed Osama bin Laden in a secret raid in Pakistan on May 2. But the Pakistani Taliban, who vowed to avenge his death, have carried out a series of attacks.
Another policeman said the shooting occurred near the Khyber Model School, which employed the bus.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 14, 2011) ? Researchers from the Stanford University School of Medicine have taken a first step toward developing a diagnostic tool that could eliminate a major hurdle in pain medicine -- the dependency on self-reporting to measure the presence or absence of pain. The new tool would use patterns of brain activity to give an objective physiologic assessment of whether someone is in pain.
The scientists used functional magnetic resonance imaging scans of the brain combined with advanced computer algorithms to accurately predict thermal pain 81 percent of the time in healthy subjects, according to a study that will be published Sept. 13 in the online journal PLoS ONE.
"People have been looking for a pain detector for a very long time," said Sean Mackey, MD, PhD, chief of the Division of Pain Management and associate professor of anesthesiology. "We're hopeful we can eventually use this technology for better detection and better treatment of chronic pain."
Researchers stressed that future studies are needed to determine whether these methods will work to measure various kinds of pain, such as chronic pain, and whether they can distinguish accurately between pain and other emotionally arousing states, such as anxiety or depression.
"A key thing to remember is that this approach objectively measured thermal pain in a controlled lab setting," Mackey said. "We should take care not to extrapolate these findings to say we can measure and detect pain in all circumstances."
The need for a better way to objectively measure pain instead of relying on the current method of self-reporting has long been acknowledged. But the highly subjective nature of pain has made this an elusive goal.
Advances in neuroimaging techniques have re-invigorated the debate over whether it might be possible to measure pain physiologically, and, in fact, led to this current study.
"We rely on patient self-reporting for pain, and that remains the gold standard," said Mackey, senior author of the study. "That's what I, as a physician, rely on when I take care of a patient with chronic pain. But there are a large number of patients, particularly among the very young and the very old, who can't communicate their pain levels. Wouldn't it be great if we had a technique that could measure pain physiologically?"
A study released by the Institute of Medicine in June reported that more than 100 million Americans suffer chronic pain, costing around $600 billion each year in medical expenses and lost productivity. (Mackey was a member of the committee that produced the report.) What's more, it found that cultural bias against chronic pain sufferers as being weak or even worse -- they are often perceived as lying about their pain -- complicates the delivery of appropriate treatment. Similar biases crop up in the legal field, with hundreds of thousands of cases each year that hinge on the existence of pain, said Stanford law professor Hank Greely, an expert on the legal, ethical and social issues surrounding the biosciences.
"A robust, accurate way to determine whether someone is in pain or not would be a godsend for the legal system," said Greely, who did not participate in the study.
The idea for this study germinated at a 2009 Stanford Law School event organized by Greely that brought together neuroscientists and legal scholars to discuss how the neuroimaging of pain could be used and abused in the legal system. Mackey and two of his lab assistants attended.
"At the end of the symposium, there was discussion about the challenges of creating a 'painometer.' I discussed hypothetically how we could do this in the future," Mackey said. "These two young scientists in my lab came up to me after and said, 'We think we can do this. We would like to try.' I was skeptical."
The two scientists -- Neil Chatterjee, currently a MD/PhD student at Northwestern University, and first author of the study Justin Brown, PhD, now an assistant professor of biology at Simpson College -- came up with the concept in a discussion after the symposium.
"It was very much on a whim," said co-author Chatterjee. "We thought, maybe we can't make the perfect tool, but has anyone ever really tried doing this on a very, very basic level? It turned out to be surprisingly simple to do this."
Researchers took eight subjects, and put them in the brain-scanning machine. A heat probe was then applied to their forearms, causing moderate pain. The brain patterns both with and without pain were then recorded and interpreted by advanced computer algorithms to create a model of what pain looks like. The process was repeated with a second group of eight subjects.
The idea was to train a linear support vector machine -- a computer algorithm invented in 1995 -- on one set of individuals, and then use that computer model to accurately classify pain in a completely new set of individuals.
The computer was then asked to consider the brain scans of eight new subjects and determine whether they had thermal pain.
"We asked the computer to come up with what it thinks pain looks like," Chatterjee said. "Then we could measure how well the computer did." And it did amazingly well. The computer was successful 81 percent of the time.
"I was definitely surprised," Chatterjee said.
Jarred Younger, PhD, assistant professor of anesthesiology, was a co-author on this study.
The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Chris Redlich Pain Research Fund.

FCC and NTIA Want More LightSquared Tests, Congressional Hearings Continue PDF Print E-mail
Written by Marcia Smith
Tuesday, 13 September 2011 23:34
As the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) prepares to hold a hearing this week on ?Sustaining GPS for National Security,? the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) are both calling for more testing to assess the extent to which LightSquared?s planned mobile broadband communications system will interfere with GPS receivers.
It is the third hearing on the LightSquared issue in the past three months. The House Science, Space and Technology (HSS&T) Committee held a hearing last week and the House Transportation and Infrastructure (HT&I) Committee held one in June.
The HASC hearing, scheduled for Thursday at 11:30 am, is the first to hear from the FCC and NTIA. The FCC regulates use of the airwaves for the private sector, while NTIA (part of the Department of Commerce) does the same for government users. It is FCC?s January 2011 decision to grant LightSquared a provisional license to operate its hybrid satellite-terrestrial network that is creating the controversy. Detractors argue that LightSquared?s system will harmfully interfere with GPS receivers throughout the government and consumer sectors.
At the HSS&T hearing last week, LightSquared?s Jeffrey Carlisle argued that his company had worked with the FCC, NTIA and the GPS industry over many years to resolve potential interference problems. The spectrum assigned to LightSquared by the FCC is adjacent to spectrum used for GPS receivers. LightSquared asserts that the recent controversy stems from new issues raised by the GPS industry just one year ago after the company had spent billions of dollars on the system. LightSquared launched its SkyTerra satellite last year and is preparing to build 40,000 terrestrial cellular towers. The system will provide mobile broadband services using terrestrial signals, satellite signals, or a combination of the two.
The June hearing by the HT&I committee portrayed LightSquard in a largely negative light. Members appeared to be clearly in the corner of the GPS industry and civil government agencies like the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in wanting to prevent LightSquared from receiving final permission from the FCC to initiate the terrestrial component of the system. The HSS&T hearing was focused on civil government GPS users for scientific purposes such as weather satellites at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and responding to natural hazards at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The tone was somewhat different, and committee Democrats issued a press release afterwards calling for finding a way for LightSquared and GPS to coexist.
The FCC?s provisional license in January required LightSquared to set up a technical working group with the GPS industry to test the amount of interference that would result if its system became operational. The tests showed significant interference the top 10 megahertz (MHz) of the 20 MHz of spectrum assigned for the system, but less in the bottom 10 MHz. LightSquared subsequently offered to initially deploy its system only in the bottom 10 MHz of the band. The company submitted a new proposal to the FCC last week which Mr. Carlisle appended to his testimony to HSS&T. In response, Anthony Russo, director of the National Coordination Office for Space-Based Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT), told HSS&T that the revised proposal requires further study.
The FCC and NTIA agree and also are calling for additional testing. Representatives of both agencies are scheduled to testify at the HASC hearing on Thursday. Also testifying will be the commander of U.S. Air Force Space Command, DOD?s chief information officer (who testified at the HT&I hearing), and Mr. Russo (who testified at the HSS&T hearing).

Philadelphia's Jason Babin celebrates a poor play by the Rams. The Eagles won Sunday's game, 31-13.
By R.B. FALLSTROM
updated 6:28 p.m. ET Sept. 11, 2011
ST. LOUIS - The lockout didn't bother Michael Vick. It simply left him with fresh legs for the season opener.
The Eagles quarterback was in dazzling form and the other Philly game-breakers were hard to catch, too, as the team opened its self-proclaimed Super Bowl drive with a 31-13 victory over the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.
"It felt great to know that I can go out and play lights out, not have to worry about anything," Vick said. "I feel better than I've ever felt before and I give a lot of credit with the situation with the CBA, giving us a lot time to get rest and to prepare ourselves.
"I feel like I can play another four quarters right now."
The Rams couldn't keep up, especially after losing stars Steven Jackson and Sam Bradford. Jackson will undergo an MRI for a right quadriceps injury Monday. X-rays were negative on Bradford's right index finger.Vick rushed for 98 yards and passed for two scores, LeSean McCoy scored twice and DeSean Jackson topped 100 yards receiving against a defense that couldn't use injuries as an excuse.
"It was just a real disappointment the way we played," end Chris Long said. "We had a lot of self-inflicted mistakes. They made us make a lot of mistakes."
The Eagles had 239 yards rushing, were 8 for 11 on third downs, and had 16 plays good for at least double digits. And yet, Vick felt it was far from perfect.
For one thing, he connected on only 43 percent of his passes, his worst showing as a starter with the Eagles, going 14 for 32 for 187 yards.
"I'm thankful for the victory, don't get me wrong," Vick said. "I just wish it could have been a little cleaner."
The Rams are thankful they won't be seeing Vick again.
"We knew No. 7 was going to be tough to stop," coach Steve Spagnuolo said. "There's a lot of fundamental things we didn't do right."
The Eagles defense applied constant pressure and piled up five sacks, two by Jason Babin. Darryl Tapp forced a fumble by Bradford that led to an easy 56-yard touchdown return by Juqua Parker in the first quarter and also had a sack before leaving with a pectoral injury.
Jackson said he was hurt toward the end of his 47-yard scoring run on the Rams' first offensive play, even though he was untouched until a defender got a piece of his leg a step from the end zone. Soon after, he headed to the locker room, and had one more carry for 9 yards before calling it a day."It was one of those freak things. I felt a little something there," Jackson said. "I just couldn't be the runner I wanted to be."
Bradford was injured when he struck the helmet of an Eagles defender on the follow through to a pass in the fourth quarter. Spagnuolo said Bradford's injury could be nerve related, although the quarterback said he'd play in next week's Monday night game at New York against the Giants.
"I don't see any way I'm not going to be on the field, to be honest with you," Bradford said.
One of the more boisterous crowds in recent memory at the Edward Jones Dome, flush with optimism off an unbeaten preseason, was muted by the Eagles' impressive display as well as injuries to the Rams. In the second half, the Rams also lost their top cornerback, Ron Bartell, with a stinger, their leading receiver from last year, Danny Amendola, with a dislocated left elbow, and offensive tackle Jason Smith with a high left ankle sprain.
McCoy had 122 yards on 15 carries and a 49-yard TD in the fourth quarter to go with a 7-yard scoring catchin the first quarter.
Bradford was 17 for 30 for 188 yards. Jackson's backup, Cadillac Williams, had 91 yards on 19 carries.
Notes: Both teams' first-round picks were inactive. Rams DE Robert Quinn was the 14th overall pick and Eagles OG Danny Watkins was 23rd overall. Watkins recently lost his starting job to free agent pickup Kyle DeVan. The Eagles also didn't dress their second and third-round picks, S Jaiquawn Jarrett and CB Curtis Marsh. ... The Rams have six former Eagles, and all were active. ... The band from suburban Kirkwood High School, the alma mater of Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin, practiced on the high school field 3? hours before playing during the pre-game. ... Rams Hall of Fame RB Eric Dickerson attended the game. ... Parker scored his second career TD. The first was a 55-yard interception return Oct. 12, 2008 at San Francisco.

Cairns is a city in the far northeast of Australia. This week we talk to Cynthia Edwards from the Cairns and District Family History Society.
Tell us a bit about yourself .? How you got into family history research? Why you are so heavily involved with it now?
I started thinking about recording our family history about?11 years ago when our grandchildren started coming along.? As my parents had passed away some years before I realised, it was up to me to tell their stories, as well as mine to this new generation.??My mother became interested back in the seventies when she watched Janet Reakes on the Mike Walsh Show.? Sadly her researach was not recorded, including photo captions.
That was about?12 years ago however, I have only been seriously researching for the past seven or so years.? The information I started finding out about my grandparents and their siblings encouraged me to keep researching as these were the stories I never knew.? To discover so many of the people that myself, my sister and brother thought were friends of our parents, but were actually relations has been a lovely surprise.? I often sidetrack to see if I can answer questions like " How did my great-grandfather receive training when he began his teaching career in 1872?"
---
What's the background on your surname ? Have you any interesting stories in your family tree?
My maiden name is Hall- with that family coming from Ireland as Assisted Immigrants in 1864 to Moreton Bay.? My great-great-grandmother?s family name was Armstrong. Both of these surnames are said to have come from Scotland. One day I hope to be able to trace back and see if the families did, indeed, originate from Scotland. I also have two Danish families, Willadsen and Kirkegaard. I have been told that my great-great-grandfather Clemmensen added Kirkegaard to his name.?He was a teacher, church official and had the use of the kirkegaard, which literally means "church farm."
There are many interesting stories, but the most prominent one so far, was my great-grandfather, an Irish born teacher. One of her many schools was Blackstone Primary School near Ipswich in Queensland. This was a coal mining area, with many Welsh people. They requested a Welsh teacher upon the opening of their new school and received a Northern Irishman. The accents would have made for some interesting conversations. While at the school he was the subject of an inquiry held by the Civil Service Board because he "placed obstructions in the way of a member of parliament who had permission to hold a political meeting in the school room and that he was abusive in his language." He was suspended with two weeks? pay withheld. I found this information on the Trove Newspapers website.

What's your role at Cairns and District Family History Society (CDFHS) ?
My role at Cairns and District Family History is librarian, which is a lovely position. Another member and I are currently cataloguing the library so it is more user-friendly. We recently received a grant from the Queensland Government Gambling Community Benefit Fund for new shelving, so we have been busy packing up and then unpacking books. For the past year I have also been president.
---
Tell us more about?CDFHS.
CDFHS formed in 1983 as the Cairns branch of the Genealogical Society of Queensland. In 1986 the Society became an independent incorporation.?We occupy a suite of three rooms within the Raintrees Shopping Centre in the suburb of Manunda. Unfortunately the rooms are on the first floor, up a set of stairs and not visible to the public.?One room contains our book library, another contains the research room with the computers and film readers and we have a small office with all of our equipment squeezed in.?We have six computers, six old style microfiche readers and the wonderful new ScanPro reader. This machine has been well used especially by those with LDS films to read as they now can have a printout of the pages relevant to them.
CDFHS is the only family history society north of Townsville. We are open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and the second Saturday of the month from 10am to 3pm.?On public holidays and for a while over Christmas/New Year we are closed.
We are about to place on our website (www.cdfhs.org), information about a Centenary Certificate we have produced.?It is for ancestors who settled or were born in Queensland over 100 years ago. By supplying proof of this along with confirmation that the recipient is a descendant of the settler a coloured certificate may be purchased for $20.? These have been very popular with our members since their release a couple of months ago.
Our membership is usually around 90 ? 100.
---
What are some of?CDFHS's key activities?
---
Do you have an event coming up soon?
CDFHS will be holding a "Fathers Day" afternoon tea at our rooms on Saturday, 3 September from 2pm to honour our male ancestors. We invite people to bring memorabilia, photos and stories. We will also be holding a Remembrance Day event honouring our male and female Military ancestors on Saturday 12 November. Our Mothers Day event was a great success giving many of us other ideas on where and how to record our family history.
---
You've clearly been doing this for some time now - How do you see the Internet affecting genealogy / family history research?
The Internet is providing some wonderful insights from all over the world without even having to leave your home.?The basic hard copy early records are still the most informative.?When the State Library and Archives are distant from where you live, the internet provides an important link.?One of the problems with the Internet is that the new family historian is led to believe that everything can be found on the Internet.?Another is that occasionally, the wrong information is entered on sites that have family trees, taken as true details, and then carried on instead of going through channels to have it verified.
A wonderful website all our members love using is Trove. Some fascinating stories have been found providing some answers to puzzles.?We all look forward to seeing the years expand and hopefully some more of the country, mining and perhaps military newspapers added.? Well done, National Library of Australia.
---
Do you have any tips for someone starting out on the on the genealogical journey?
---
If someone wants to find out more about what you or the?CDFHS?do, how can they contact you?
You can find more about us on our website www.cdfhs.org or follow us on Facebook.? Contact our secretary on email:? secretarycfhs@gmail.com or by phone 07 4053 1530.

In Joyce McKinney, Morris has found a fittingly weird and funny muse.
Errol Morris is a genius, a gifted documentarian who has made better movies than "Tabloid," but none so entertaining.
Though the events Tabloid recounts took place in the pre-digital age, the film also functions as a kind of prehistory of modern celebrity culture and tabloid journalism.
Morris's subject is sexual fantasy and a particular kind of American stupidity-the ability to substitute self-justification for self-knowledge. His tone is merry.
It is quite simply one of the craziest stories ever told, made all the crazier by the fact that it's true. Or at least some version of it is true.
Tabloid, Errol Morris' latest wild and woolly portrait of human self-delusion, is a scandal-sheet dream come to life.
You may see -- and perhaps already have seen -- better documentaries this year than Errol Morris' Tabloid, but I doubt you'll see a more entertaining one.
Tabloid is a nice commentary on [Errol Morris'] particular style of 'truth-telling' and objectivity. In the end, we're all lying simply by telling our version of the truth.
Morris has found a real character in McKinney, but to what end, I couldn't say.
"Tabloid" is tantalizing, but like yesterday's headlines, it's a fleeting flirtation.
It's a titillating yarn told with verve, but it doesn't shed much light on how tabloids create and encourage such stories, nor does it, finally, tell us much about human nature -- other than, perhaps, to illustrate an extreme case of it.
The celebrated filmmaker has created a meta-tabloid of sorts, surrendering to the idea that the truth is absurdly unknowable.
Morris compellingly unfolds the story and clearly means for us to see our own untoward qualities writ large in Joyce and the circus surrounding her.
Fascinating, whimsically humorous and poignant, all at once.
In addition to his admirable qualities, Morris also seems to find his subject to be hilarious. And she is.
a magnificently unsettling and funny-sad portrait of the arguably sick relationships that are forged between celebrities, the media, and their audiences
The film around [Joyce] McKinney isn't quite sure of what it's about, at times... but McKinney herself is the sort of arresting figure that you don't shake easily.
Errol Morris succeeds against all odds in besting his previous Olympians of quirkiness.
William Carlos Williams wrote "The pure products of America/ Go crazy," and the funny, freaky Tabloid captures that contrast, that promise, that curse.
