Syrian rebels "hold fire," want to meet monitors (Reuters)

BEIRUT (Reuters) ? The anti-government Free Syrian Army has ordered its fighters to stop offensive operations pending a meeting with Arab League delegates monitoring President Bashar al-Assad's compliance with a peace plan, the rebels' commander said on Friday.

Colonel Riad al-Asaad said his forces had so far been unable to talk to the monitors, in the first week of their month-long mission, and he was still trying to contact them urgently.

"I issued an order to stop all operations from the day the committee entered Syria last Friday. All operations against the regime are to be stopped except in a situation of self defense," he told Reuters.

"We have tried to communicate with them and we requested a meeting with the team. So far there hasn't been any success. We haven't been given any of the (phone) numbers for the monitors, which we have requested. No one has contacted us either."

How widely Turkey-based al-Asaad's order is heeded by anti-government gunmen inside Syria is in question. A video shot by rebel fighters this week showed the ambush of a convoy of army buses in which, activists said, four soldiers were killed.

Assad has signed up to an Arab League plan for a verifiable withdrawal of his heavy weaponry and army from turbulent Syrian cities where more than 5,000 people have been killed since March, many shot during peaceful anti-government protests but also many killed in rebel attacks and defense actions.

The Arab League mission has met with strong skepticism from the outset, over its makeup, its small numbers, its reliance on Syrian government logistics and an initial assessment by its Sudanese chief that the situation was "reassuring."

That comment was met with disbelief in the West on Wednesday but on Friday, Syria's ally Russia accepted the judgment.

"Judging by the public statements made by the chief of the mission M. Al-Dabi, who in the first of his visits went to the city of Homs ... the situation seems to be reassuring," the Russian Foreign Ministry said on its website.

Sudan's General Mustafa al-Dabi, who some link to war crimes in Darfur in the 1990s, visited the flashpoint city of Homs briefly on Tuesday and said he saw "nothing frightening."

Activist video from Homs over the months has depicted a trail of death and destruction sowed by the military, with hundreds of killings of civilians reported.

The British Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition activist network, said protests broke out on Friday in several areas of the country, including a large gathering of 70,000 in the Damascus suburb of Douma, where monitors were present.

Pro-Assad demonstrations were also reported.

The Observatory said Syrian forces killed four people, including two defectors, in an ambush in Talkalakh near Lebanon's border.

"Unfortunately, reports show that the violence has continued in Syria over the past few days," Britain's Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, Alistair Burt, said in a statement.

"I urge the Syrian government to meet fully its obligations to the Arab League, including immediately ending the repression and withdrawing security forces from cities. The Syrian government must allow the Arab League mission independent and unrestricted access ..." Burt said.

In Brussels, a spokesperson for European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said the EU also "urges Syria to comply with the Action plan of the Arab league in all its components" including "an immediate end of violence, the release of political prisoners, pulling the military out of cities."

PARTNER FOR PEACE?

The FSA, formed by thousands of defectors from Assad's military and security forces and financed by expatriate Syrians, has gone on the offensive in the past three months, taking the fight to the state rather than simply trying to defend opposition strongholds.

Its decisions are potentially crucial to any peace plan.

"Some of (our) soldiers inside Syria are trying to reach out to them but so far it doesn't seem the committee members have been given enough freedom of movement so that the soldiers can meet them. The monitors are escorted by some members of Syrian security. Our defectors if found can be arrested and even executed ..." Colonel al-Asaad said.

He said about 1,500 of his men were in custody and out of reach. He wanted to know their fate.

The monitoring teams have encountered a range of problems, from hostility when they turn up under army escort, to random gunfire and communications breakdowns.

Friday could prove another testing days as opponents of Assad take to the streets following Muslim prayers, the main day of protest in the revolts that have swept the Arab world.

In the northern city of Idlib, activists said the army had moved its armor out of sight.

"Security forces have moved some of their tanks out of the neighborhood streets and have put them behind buildings further out," said Manhal of the local coordination committee. "They have also moved the tanks out of main streets. Some of them they moved into dugouts."

The Arab League mission has so far failed to end Syria's nine-month orgy of violence in response to demands for Assad to step down, although it was never advertised as a peacekeeping mission as such.

Government security forces shot dead 25 people on Thursday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. They opened fire on protests in cities around the country, also wounding about 100 people.

Activists contacted by telephone said they had little hope the Arab League monitors would protect them but they still aimed to bring people out into the streets after Friday prayers.

"We know that just because they are here, it doesn't mean the bloodshed will stop. But at least they will see it," said one activist in Hama, who was unwilling to give his name.

An Arab League member from a Gulf State played down expectations for the mission.

Even if its report turns out to be negative it would not "act as a bridge to foreign intervention" but simply indicate that "the Syrian government has not implemented the Arab initiative," the delegate told Reuters.

"The delegation is not meant to search or inspect anything other than this. It is not a fact-finding mission or an investigative committee ... The commission is meant to tell the League if Syria has committed to withdrawing its military from cities and to check if those who were detained during recent events have been released, and if Arab and international media are able to report on the situation freely or not."

Syria says it is fighting Islamist militants steered from abroad who have killed more than 2,000 of its security forces personnel. Activist sources do not dispute that there has been a significant toll among the security forces.

Most foreign journalists, including Reuters correspondents, are banned from the country, making it impossible to verify the reports on the ground.

When I connect my digital camera to my iPad it will only download the stills, not the videos. How can I download the videos? I have the USB and HDMI connectors for the iPad.

If your camera has an SD memory card, use the camera connection kit & the SD card to download to the iPad. That's what I do.

?

Another way that will work. Download the video(s) to your computer. Then you can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.

?

First, Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie file into the folder. The movie file must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov).

?

Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie file should appear & you can import.

?

? Cheers, Tom

How to Make a Campaign Ad, By Rick Perry

Political blog Pardon the Pundit has come up with a hilarious guide to making a campaign ad using Rick Perry's recent "Strong" video as its principal case study.

If you recall, Perry started running this 30 second piece of art to prove that he's the real conservative of the Republican party. And Obama hates Christmas.

It's a pretty great political satire of political commercial. Check out the breakdown and the original ad spot run by the Texas Governor in Iowa below ...

Del. judge explains reasoning in Dodgers case

By JESSICA GRESKO

updated 12:38 p.m. ET Dec. 27, 2011

WASHINGTON - A U.S. District Judge in Delaware says a bankruptcy judge erred in freeing the Los Angeles Dodgers from provisions of its current Fox Sports TV contract.

U.S. District Judge Leonard Stark released a 33-page ruling Tuesday explaining his reasoning after he issued an order last Friday to halt the Dodgers' plans to sell the media rights to future games as part of the team's impending sale.

Fox currently has the rights to produce, record and telecast Dodgers games through the 2013 season. The contract gives Fox certain rights in negotiating an extension, including the right to talk exclusively with the team in advance of competing offers. But a judge handling the team's bankruptcy proceedings ruled the "no-shop" provisions were unenforceable in bankruptcy.

Fox has appealed that decision, which hurts its chances of holding on to the broadcasting rights. Lawyers are set to argue the appeal before Stark in January.

Stark said lawyers for Fox have demonstrated a substantial likelihood they will succeed in January's hearing. That's because the bankruptcy judge who freed the Dodgers from the current contract arrangement with Fox improperly relied on a single case in making his decision, Stark said. In addition, Stark wrote that U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Kevin Gross likely made two factual mistakes: finding that the sale of the broadcasting rights was necessary to ensure creditors were paid and finding that the broadcasting rights needed to be sold to maximize the team's value.

The Dodgers sought bankruptcy protection in June after baseball Commissioner Bud Selig rejected a new TV deal with Fox that Dodgers owner Frank McCourt was counting on to keep the franchise solvent. The Dodgers ultimately reached an agreement with the league that calls for a sale of both the team and the media rights. The team must be sold by April 30.

Fox Sports spokesman Chris Bellitti and a Dodgers spokeswoman did not immediately return telephone messages Tuesday requesting comment.

The April 30 sale deadline in the settlement between the Dodgers and MLB coincides with the deadline for McCourt to pay $131 million to his ex-wife, Jamie, as part of their divorce settlement.

General: Improve US coordination with Pakistan (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Military officials have not ruled out disciplinary action as a result of the cross-border attack that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, but no one has been punished to date, the Pentagon said Tuesday.

An investigation into the incident concluded that a persistent lack of trust between the U.S. and Pakistan, and a series of communications and coordination errors on both sides, led to the attacks.

Navy Capt. John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman, said military leaders will use the final report on the investigation to determine if anyone should be punished. Those decisions, he said, would be made by officers in the chain of command, depending on whether they found that mistakes were made by U.S. or NATO personnel.

As a result of the probe, the top U.S. general for the Middle East issued a list of improvements Monday he said must be made to keep similar mistakes from happening.

U.S. Marine Gen. James N. Mattis, commander of U.S. Central Command, ordered commanders in Afghanistan to improve coordination of operations along the Afghan-Pakistan border with Pakistani military, and ensure that all border stations are listed correctly on maps.

Mattis also ordered commanders to confirm border post locations before beginning operations along the border. And he ordered commanders to share military practices and procedures with the Pakistanis so they can better understand U.S. operations.

It's not certain the new orders will solve the problems, because Pakistan refused to participate in the investigation. It still is unclear why Pakistani troops initially fired on U.S. soldiers who had landed by helicopter near a village close to the border as part of a mission to go after insurgents.

The U.S. investigation found that the Pakistani forces fired first and that U.S. troops acted in self-defense. But U.S. efforts to determine if there were Pakistani forces in the area were foiled by bad maps, poor coordination and Islamabad's failure to provide the locations of its border posts.

The investigation, headed by Brig. Gen. Stephen Clark, an Air Force special operations officer, found that U.S. forces relying on erroneous maps and poor communications, determined that there were no Pakistani forces or border posts in the area. So they concluded that they were being fired on by insurgents.

U.S. forces also believed that since they had landed in distinctive, noisy Chinook helicopters and fired off warning flares, any friendly forces would have realized that they were shooting at American or NATO troops.

The report also revealed that a U.S. C-130 gunship briefly flew about two miles into Pakistan airspace during the assault.

Pakistani army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas has rejected the U.S. report and insisted that Pakistani forces retaliated only after coalition helicopters "started engagement." And he denied that Pakistan failed to notify NATO of the location of the two border posts that were attacked.

Pakistani officials have said the report is unlikely to repair the severely damaged relationship between the two countries.

In response to the incident, Pakistan shut down key border supply routes for the Afghanistan war and threw the U.S. out of its Shamsi air base in southwestern Baluchistan province. The base was used to maintain drones deployed in strikes against insurgents hiding in safe havens in Pakistan's lawless border region.

Pakistan has closed the border on at least two other occasions after disputes with the U.S. but reopened the supply routes after less than two weeks. American officials have acknowledged the closures are likely to last longer this time.

Apple has plans to use hydrogen in batteries allowing iPhones and iPods to hold a charge for WEEKS

By Meghan Keneally

Last updated at 5:10 PM on 25th December 2011

Batteries as you know them may become a thing of the past for your Apple products as the company hopes to use hydrogen cells to produce lighter batteries that could last for weeks.

The company is staying on the cutting edge as they have recently submitted applications for patents to create new energy sources for their products.

The filings that the company submitted seem to have rather bold promises of allowing electronics to run for days or weeks without having to be recharged.

What's next: Their patent applications detail their plans for hydrogen fuel cells

'Such fuel cells and associated fuels can potentially achieve high volumetric and gravimetric energy densities, which can potentially enable continued operation of portable electronic devices for days or even weeks without refuelling,' the filings report.

Not only would their plan to use hydrogen fuel cells get rid of 'the need for a bulky and heavy battery' but it would also help the environment.

Lighter and longer: The proposed hydrogen fuel batteries would allow Apple products to weigh less and last for weeks without being recharged

By switching from standard batteries which use toxic chemicals to hydrogen, the by-products of the new technology would only be water and electrical energy.

'Our country's continuing reliance on fossil fuels has forced our government to maintain complicated political and military relationships with unstable governments in the Middle East, and has also exposed our coastlines and our citizens to the associated hazards of offshore drilling,' the company wrote in it's patent application.

'These problems have led to an increasing awareness and desire on the part of consumers to promote and use renewable energy sources,' it continued.

The idea of hydrogen fuel technology isn't new, but this is the clearest indication of exactly what the company intends to do to improve users experiences with the iPod or iPhone.

Apple Insider reported that the first round of patent applications on the subject came in October when they filed papers that mentioned 'lighter and more efficient hydrogen fuel cells'.?

?

While the iPhone 4S was released after the death of legendary Apple founder Steve Jobs in October, a technological breakthrough like an entirely different battery would be a massive upswing for the company.

The new iPhone 5 is still on the imminent horizon, as initial predictions put its release date at sometime in late December.

Five Best Blu-Ray Playback Suites [Hive Five]

Five Best Blu-Ray Playback Suites Playing Blu-ray movies on the go on a laptop or in the living room on an HTPC with a Blu-ray drive doesn't have to be difficult, but if you want true HD video quality and the experience of navigating disc extras and menus, you'll need a Blu-ray media player that's up to the task. Here are five of the best Blu-ray compatible media players, based on your nominations.

Earlier in the week, we asked you which application you used and thought is the best for the job. You responded, and now we're back to highlight the top five.

Five Best Blu-Ray Playback Suites

CyberLink PowerDVD

PowerDVD, in many cases, is pre-installed on systems that ship with Blu-ray drives, and ships along with Blu-ray drives that you order to install into a desktop or HTPC. PowerDVD fully supports Blu-ray discs, upscales standard definition content, plays just about any other type of video, and even supports audio playback and photo slideshows. PowerDVD Mobile allows you to take some of your media with you on your Android phone or tablet, and PowerDVD Remote allows you to turn your smartphone or tablet into a remote control for your PowerDVD enabled system. The app also supports 3D Blu-ray discs, and Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Power DVD comes in three flavors, Standard for $40, Deluxe for $56, and Ultra for $60.

Five Best Blu-Ray Playback Suites

ArcSoft Total Media

Total Media and Total Media Theatre all bring you full Blu-ray support, support 3D Blu-ray, and supports upscaling other standard definition video, both locally on your system and DVDs you put into your system. Total Media also supports streaming video from YouTube and other Internet sources, the ability to change your system's region code to match the disc you want to play, and serves as an all-in-one media management tool and player for almost any video and audio type and format. Total Media Theatre will set you back about $100, but you can download a free trial to make sure it's for you before you buy.

Five Best Blu-Ray Playback Suites

SlySoft AnyDVD HD

SlySoft AnyDVD HD is a great tool for freeing your discs and media from being locked in to specific players, regions, or formats. AnyDVD HD lets you play any disc (in another player), regardless of its region code, and doesn't even require an HDCP-compliant graphics card or display. What this means to you is that the tool gives you more freedom to watch your Blu-ray discs on any display you choose and over any video connection you have available. AnyDVD HD has also made a name for itself as the tool that can unlock DVD and Blu-ray discs that other desktop players refuse to play. It's available as a free trial for 21 days, but after that you'll have to cough up 63 EUR (approx $82 USD) for a full license, plus one year of software updates. The price goes up depending on how many years of updates you want to pay for, up to a 119 EUR ($155 USD) lifetime subscription price.

Five Best Blu-Ray Playback Suites

PotPlayer

PotPlayer was developed by the same developer behind our pick for the best video player for Windows, KMPlayer. It's free, plays Blu-ray and other HD video, supports discs and ripped video, and even supports HD video embedded in ZIP and RAR archives. It's simple, and doesn't offer the bells and whistles that a lot of the other, more expensive tools do, but if you're looking for a siple, lightweight Blu-ray player, it can't be beat. There are 32 and 64-bit versions available, and there are plenty of skins available so you can customize the look and feel of the player.

Five Best Blu-Ray Playback Suites

Corel WinDVD Pro

Corel WinDVD Pro is another tool that ships with a lot of systems that have Blu-ray drives pre-installed. It supports 3D video and even comes with 3D glasses in the box, if you're buying the most recent version. If you're a 3D fanatic, WinDVD Pro promises to convert your 2D videos to 3D so you can enjoy them with your passive 3D glasses on, but if 3D is too gimmicky for you, it's a very capable Blu-ray player that can play the discs you insert and upscale standard DVDs with no problems. WinDVD also includes a wealth of video enhancement tools that can clean up ripped video and disc playback to make your video look cleaner and brighter on large and small screens. It also has a free trial available, but a full license will set you back $59.99.

Now that you've seen the top five, it's time to vote for an all out winner.

Honorable mentions this week go out to VLC, which is a natural choice for many people, since it's free and most of us have it installed on our systems anyway. Another honorable mention is the venerable None?many of you said that you don't bother with a specific Blu-ray player, and you prefer to rip your Blu-ray videos and stream them to your TV at home or load them on your laptop if you plan to take them with you on the go, or use a standalone Blu-ray player in your home theater instead of dropping a Blu-ray into your HTPC.

Did your favorite not get enough nominations to make the top five? Did we miss a feature you love about one of the candidates above? Whatever you think, let's hear it in the comments.

SEATTLE (AP) ? Scuffles broke out and police were brought in to quell unrest that nearly turned into riots across the United States following the release of Nike's new Air Jordan basketball shoes ? a retro model of one of the most popular Air Jordans ever made.

The frenzy over Air Jordans has been dangerous in the past. Some people were mugged or even killed for early versions of the shoe, created by Nike Inc. in 1984.

The Air Jordan has since been a consistent hit with sneaker fans, spawning a subculture of collectors willing to wait hours to buy the latest pair. Some collectors save the shoes for special occasions or never take them out of the box.

The mayhem stretched from Washington state to Georgia Friday and was reminiscent of the violence that broke out 20 years ago in many cities as the shoes became popular targets for thieves. It also had a decidedly Black Friday feel as huge crowds of shoppers overwhelmed stores for a must-have item.

In suburban Seattle, police used pepper spray on about 20 customers who started fighting at the Westfield Southcenter mall. The crowd started gathering at four stores in the mall around midnight and had grown to more than 1,000 people by 4 a.m., when the stores opened, Tukwila Officer Mike Murphy said. He said it started as fighting and pushing among people in line and escalated over the next hour.

Murphy said no injuries were reported, although some people suffered cuts or scrapes from fights. Shoppers also broke two doors, and 18-year-old man was arrested for assault after authorities say he punched an officer.

"He did not get his shoes; he went to jail," Murphy said.

The $180 (?137.86) shoes went on sale Friday in a limited release at stores, and the lines began forming several hours before businesses opened.

As the crowds kept growing through the night, they became more unruly and ended in vandalism, violence and arrests.

A man was stabbed when a brawl broke out between several people waiting in line at a Jersey City, New Jersey, mall to buy the new shoes, authorities said. The 20-year-old man was expected to recover from his injuries.

In Georgia, officers said they had to break a car window to get two toddlers out after a woman went in after the shoes. They said she was taken into custody when she returned to the car.

In California, police say crowds waiting to buy the Air Jordan 11 Retro Concords at the Hilltop Mall were turned away after a gunshot rang out around 7 a.m.

No injuries were reported, but police said a 24-year-old suspect was taken into custody. The gun apparently went off inadvertently, the Contra Costa Times reported.

A new edition has been launched each year, and release dates had to be moved to the weekends at some points to keep kids from skipping school to get a pair.

But the uproar over the shoe had died down in recent years. These latest incidents seem to be part of trend of increasing acts of violence at retailers this holiday shopping season, such as the shopper who pepper-sprayed others at a Wal-Mart in Los Angeles on the day after the Thanksgiving holiday, known as Black Friday and crowds looting a clothing store in New York.

Nike issued a statement in response to the violence that said: "Consumer safety and security is of paramount importance. We encourage anyone wishing to purchase our product to do so in a respectful and safe manner."

Gingrich booted from Virginia ballot (Politico)

Newt Gingrich failed to make the primary ballot in Virginia after a weeklong scramble by the former House speaker?s campaign to gather sufficient signatures.

?After verification, RPV has determined that Newt Gingrich did not submit required 10k signatures and has not qualified for the VA primary,? the Republican Party of Virginia wrote on its official Twitter account early Saturday morning.

The party announced Friday evening that Rick Perry had failed to meet the qualifications as well. That leaves the race in the state between Mitt Romney and Ron Paul. Other candidates did not submit signatures.

And the Gingrich campaign?s response ? that it would mount a write-in campaign ? won?t solve the problem.

?Gingrich cannot have voters write in, because Va. Code section 24.2-529 prohibits write-in ballots in primary elections,? Carl Tobias, a professor at the University of Richmond School of Law, explained via email.

Gingrich?s campaign director Michael Krull pledged a fight Saturday.

?Only a failed system excludes four out of the six major candidates seeking access to the ballot. Voters deserve the right to vote for any top contender, especially leading candidates,? Krull?s statement read. ?We will work with the Republican Party of Virginia to pursue an aggressive write-in campaign to make sure that all the voters of Virginia are able to vote for the candidate of their choice.?

The Virginia primary isn?t until March 6 ? Super Tuesday ? but the effort to get on the ballot was seen as a test of Gingrich?s organizational ability, which has been in doubt despite his burst in the polls.

Gingrich himself trumped up the stakes Wednesday night, after pulling away from early state campaigning to shore up the effort.

?Once again in Virginia we?re going to disappoint the Republican establishment, because tomorrow in Richmond, we?re going to turn in vastly more signatures than you need,? Gingrich told about 200 people.

The next day, he did two events in Richmond ? one hosted by the Republican Party of Virginia that drew a crowd, and another ?Virginians with Newt? rally that drew only 35 people.

The failure could prove significant if there is the protracted primary fight Romney predicted to POLITICO earlier this month, which would enable the former Massachusetts governor to capitalize on his better-organized operation to hold off Gingrich.

It also saps Gingrich of one of the states where his numbers were highest. In a Public Policy Polling survey earlier this month, Gingrich had a strong lead in the Virginia primary, receiving 41 percent of the support with Romney in second with 15 percent. A Dec. 21 Quinnipiac poll of Virginia Republicans found a closer margin, with Gingrich leading Romney 30 to 25 percent.

This is the second primary ballot Gingrich has failed to make. He missed a deadline in Missouri last month to appear in their primary vote. He struggled to get on the ballot in Ohio.

Gingrich, who lives in the Washington suburb of McLean, had put in a last-minute effort to get on the ballot, paying contractors more than $1.50 per signature collected.

Gingrich submitted about 11,000 signatures. The party was required to review each one and to ensure they had at least 10,000 were from valid registered voters.

Romney and Paul submitted 15,000 signatures, preempting the signature-by-signature review process.

There are 49 delegates at stake in the Virginia primary.

James Hohmann contributed to this report.

'Ender's Game' Stars Harrison Ford and Abigail Breslin

In the wake of successful book-to-film franchises like Harry Potter, Twilight and most recently, Hunger Games, "Ender's Game" tries its luck at the trend.

The future is looking bright for this new teen-friendly production as co-financers OddLot Entertainment and Summit Entertainment sign on two acclaimed Hollywood actors to star.

Variety reports A-List actor Harrison Ford ("Indiana Jones") and child wonder Abigail Breslin ("Little Miss Sunshine") are both locked in for roles in the film adaptation of the sci-fi novel.

Ford, 69, will play Colonel Hyrum Graff who trains the students, while Breslin, 15, is cast as Valentine Wiggin, the sister of the genius protagonist Ender Wiggin.

In this movie, Ford veers away from the typical leading man he's known (and well-suited) for.

"I'm pretty much out of the hero business these days," he tells The Sydney Morning Herald.

Like us on Facebook

"You don't play a hero. You play a person. You play the moment. You create a character that gives expression to the story. You don't show up and say 'I'm a hero,'" the famous star explains.

Breslin is several decades younger then the "Star Wars" heartthrob, but she shares the same desire to play a variety of roles.

"I never want to play the same character three times in a row, and I've been very lucky not to have to do that. I don't really have a set plan. I kind of go script by script, and if I like the character - and the script - I do it," the young actress says in an interview with Globe and Mail.

Other thespians already casted in "Ender's Game" are Asa Butterfield ("Hugo"), Hailee Steinfeld ("True Grit"), Jimmy Pinchak ("Let Me In"), Aramis Knight ("Rendition") and Moises Arias ("Hannah Montana"). Ben Kingsley is also being eyed for a role in the movie.

"Ender's Game" is the first of a series of popular books that's set in the future where mankind lives in constant anticipation of an alien invasion. As preparation, humans have taken to training the most promising children as eventual commanders.

"X-Men Origins: Wolverine" director Gavin Hood will spearhead this potential box-office hit, along with producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.

"Ender's Game" is slated for a March 2012 release.

(AP) ? The youthful thief who rocketed to international notoriety as the "Barefoot Bandit" while he evaded police in pilfered cars, boats and planes during a two-year crime spree was sentenced Friday to more than seven years in a Washington state prison after pleading guilty to dozens of charges.

Colton Harris-Moore, now 20, showed no reaction as the sentence was delivered by a judge who took pity on his bleak upbringing at the hands of an alcoholic mother and a series of her convict boyfriends ? a situation she described as a "mind-numbing absence of hope."

"This case is a tragedy in many ways, but it's a triumph of the human spirit in other ways," Island County Judge Vickie Churchill said. "I could have been reading about the history of a mass murderer. I could have been reading about a drug abusive, alcoholic young man. That is the triumph of Colton Harris-Moore: He has survived."

Harris-Moore's daring run from the law earned him international fame and a movie deal to help repay his victims after he flew a stolen plane from Indiana to the Bahamas in July 2010, crash-landed it near a mangrove swamp and was arrested by Bahamian authorities in a hail of bullets.

Friday's proceedings consolidated cases against Harris-Moore in three Washington counties. He has already pleaded guilty to federal charges in Seattle and will be sentenced for those crimes early next year, but the sentence is expected to be shorter than his state term.

Harris-Moore faced a sentencing range of just over seven years to just under 10 years.

"Colton's very pleased," said his attorney John Henry Browne. "He was expecting the worst."

Island County Prosecutor Greg Banks said he's glad the case is over and he could live with the sentence.

"I can see why people are sympathetic to him," Banks said. "It's still a significant amount of time for someone who's never been in the adult system."

Wearing handcuffs and an orange jail uniform, Colton Harris-Moore spoke softly in court while entering his pleas.

In a statement provided to the judge, he said his childhood was one he wouldn't wish on his "darkest enemies."

Still, he said he takes responsibility for the crime spree that brought him international notoriety, and said he learned only too late of the fear he was instilling in his victims.

Harris-Moore said he studied manuals and online videos to teach himself to be a pilot, and the thrills he experienced while flying stolen planes renewed his passion for life and will help him rehabilitate while in prison.

"The euphoria of the countdown to takeoff and the realization of a dream was nearly blinding," he wrote of his first illicit flight on Nov. 11, 2008. "My first thought after takeoff was 'Oh my God, I'm flying.' I had waited my entire life for that moment."

He said he'll use his prison time to study and get ready to apply to college, with the hope of earning an aeronautical engineering degree.

Several victims and a few curious citizens watched Harris-Moore enter his pleas in Island County Superior Court, along with Harris-Moore's aunt.

Browne also said the young man's time on the run was horrific and included spending nights in culverts and portable toilets.

Harris-Moore's first conviction came at age 12, in 2004, for possession of stolen property, and according to the reports, his first experience with burglary came when he broke into the homes of his classmates to steal food because his mother spent most of her Social Security income on beer and cigarettes ? something she has denied.

Over the next three years he was convicted of theft, burglary, malicious mischief and assault, among other crimes.

In 2007, the boy was sentenced to three years in a juvenile lockup after pleading guilty to three burglary counts in Island County. But he fled the minimum-security facility in April 2008 and was soon back to his old tricks, breaking into unoccupied vacation homes, stealing food and sometimes staying there.

As red-faced investigators repeatedly failed to catch him, his antics escalated: He began stealing planes from small, rural airports and crash-landing them ? at least five in all.

Waves of burglaries broke out on Orcas Island, where Kyle Ater runs his Homegrown Market and Deli, in late 2009 and in early 2010, after stolen planes were found at the airport there. The second time, Harris-Moore left Ater's new security system in a utility sink, under a running faucet.

Harris-Moore's final spree came after he stole a pistol in eastern British Columbia and took a plane from a hangar in Idaho, where investigators found bare footprints on the floor and wall. That plane crashed near Granite Falls, Wash., after it ran out of fuel.

He made his way to Oregon in a 32-foot boat stolen in southwestern Washington ? stopping first to leave $100 at an animal shelter in Raymond, Wash. From Oregon, authorities said, Harris-Moore traveled across the United States, frequently stealing cars from the parking lots of small airports. In Indiana, he stole another plane and made for the Bahamas, more than 1,000 miles away, where authorities finally caught him in a manhunt that spanned multiple islands.

Among the courtroom spectators Friday were 18-year-olds Annie Cain and Hayley Hanna, who drove from nearby Langley to be at the courthouse at 5:30 a.m. ? four hours before the hearing.

"We wanted to be here just because he's so young, and everything he did, it's fascinating," Cain said.

Fox bought the movie rights in a deal that could be worth $1.3 million, and Dustin Lance Black, who won an Academy Award for writing the movie "Milk," about the gay rights activist Harvey Milk, is working on the screenplay.

Harris-Moore doesn't get to keep any of the money under the terms of his federal plea deal.

Only 2.8% Of Website Visitors Opt In To Facebook Personalization

Facebook Login Click Through RateMany websites include Facebook integrations in hopes of offering a personalization that can increase conversions, page views, and social sharing. However, just 2.8% of ecommerce site visitors end up with a personalized experience, as only 5% click the Facebook login buttons, and then only 56% follow through with granting a site permission to access their data, according to a new study by Sociable Labs. This shows that users aren't actually as scared of the Facebook authorization flow's privacy implications as some might assume. The real hurdle is getting users to click the login button in the first.

Washington, Vernon say they're leaving Miami early

(AP) ? Miami officials announced Friday that offensive lineman Brandon Washington and defensive end Olivier Vernon are skipping their final college seasons for the NFL draft.

Washington was one of nine players to start all 12 games for the Hurricanes this past season. Miami has now had five underclassmen declare for the 2012 draft, including running back Lamar Miller, wide receiver Tommy Streeter and defensive lineman Marcus Forston.

Vernon was suspended for the first six games this season after an investigation showed he took extra benefits from a former booster during the recruiting process. He had 18 tackles in six games this season with the Hurricanes.

Miami is losing two other offensive line starters to graduation, along with quarterback Jacory Harris and top linebacker Sean Spence.

100 years on, Antarctic science going strong

This week, dozens of brave revelers ? the prime minister of Norway among them ? are converging on the South Pole to celebrate the historic trek of Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, the first human to set foot there on Dec. 14, 1911.

Yet in an ironic twist, some might argue that it is the runner-up in the grueling contest whose legacy has proved more lasting.

British explorer Robert Falcon Scott, who reached the pole a month after Amundsen, died on his return march, unable to escape the tightening noose of the Antarctic winter. And although his oft-maligned tactics proved, in part, to be his undoing, Scott's insistence on bringing scientists on his expedition ? at great cost to himself ? helped spark a tradition of scientific inquiry in Antarctica that endures to this day, according to Ross MacPhee, curator at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and author of the book, "Race to The End: Amundsen, Scott, and the Attainment of the South Pole" (Sterling Innovation, 2010).

"Every scientist working in Antarctica today owes Scott something," MacPhee told OurAmazingPlanet in September. [ Images: Scott's Lost Photos ]

Science is now one of the primary drivers of human activity on the continent.

Each year, when the perpetual daylight of austral summer begins, droves of scientists descend on Antarctica to study its biology, drill deep into its ice, and send airplanes soaring overhead to image what lies underneath its glaciers.

Nearly 30 countries operate more than 80 research stations around the continent, according to 2009 numbers from the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs.

A flurry of work is now under way on and around the continent.

Charismatic fauna
Some scientists come to study the unique crowds of marine life that gather near the nutrient-rich waters off the Antarctic coast in the comparatively balmy summer. Penguins may be the most beloved of the local animal pantheon, but studying these birds is nothing like a Disney movie.

"Penguins are not cuddly at all. They're really very strong and very feisty, and they don't like to be picked up, which we try not to do," said David Ainley, a marine ecologist who has been studying Ad?lie penguins in Antarctica since the late 1960s.

For decades, Ainley, now with the California-based ecological consulting firm H.T. Harvey & Associates, has researched why penguin populations are changing; some colonies have grown, others have shrunk. He said he's interested in answering a very basic question about life on our planet ? how do animals cope with their environment? ? and that penguins are the ideal research subject.

"They're fairly large so you can put instruments on them and record their behavior," Ainley told OurAmazingPlanet just hours before he boarded a plane headed south.

In addition, he said, they're pretty easy to find. "Penguins are very visible," Ainley said. "In the Antarctic they don't have any place to hide. They don't live in burrows, and it's daylight all the time."

Biological time trip
While Ainley and his team spend their days on the rocky slopes of Antarctic islands, other scientists spend the austral summer on ships. David Barnes, with the British Antarctic Survey, spoke with OurAmazingPlanet from the RRS James Ross, a research vessel parked near the Antarctic Peninsula, the long finger of land that points toward South America.

Barnes said that his research focuses on trying to unlock the secrets of Antarctica's icy past, specifically how the reach of the massive West Antarctic Ice Sheet has changed from age to age. Scientists know it has been larger than it is now, and some suspect it has been smaller than it is now, but anything more exact is difficult to pin down.

"The problem is that every time there's an ice age it's wiped out everything ? so we don't really know where the last ice sheet got to," Barnes said. But there is another way to peek into the Antarctic's past: "Where we can't get good signals from glaciology or geology, biology has a cunning way of stepping in," he said.

Barnes looks at the genetic makeup of sea creatures around western Antarctica to determine how long populations have been isolated from one another by the ice.

"Genetics preserve a connection between species and populations, so by looking around Antarctica at various depths we can get an idea of whether that area used to be underneath an ice sheet," Barnes said.

That information can, in turn, help scientists figure out how the West Antarctic Ice Sheet behaved in climates past, and how it might behave in our warming world.

Ice life
Still other scientists will spend the austral summer living on the ice itself. Robert Bindschadler, a glaciologist and scientist emeritus with NASA, along with a small team of researchers, will spend six weeks sleeping in small tents on a floating plain of ice ? the Pine Island Glacier ice shelf ? the outlet of one of the largest and fastest moving glaciers in Antarctica.

Ice shelves, which ring the continent, appear to be a key player in the increasing and alarming rate at which glaciers in the West Antarctic Ice Sheet are melting and raising sea levels in recent years, Bindschadler said. But getting direct observations of how this is happening is a challenge. Satellite imaging and data provide some details, but the continent is remote, and its long, brutal winter permits scientists to work there for only about three months a year, [ Stunning Photos of Antarctic Ice ]

Observations indicate that comparatively warm ocean water is lapping away at the ice shelves, which, as they weaken, allow glaciers to slide into the sea at a faster and faster clip ? yet the direct mechanisms remain hidden from view.

"Satellites have taken us really far, but they can't give us the answers to what's going on underneath," Bindschadler said. To that end, his team will spend its days drilling several ?holes through nearly a third of a mile (500 meters) of ice to drop sensors into the sea below to measure variations in temperature and currents.

Some scientists conduct their research from the air, working aboard planes equipped with imaging technology that can peer beneath the ice. ? NASA's IceBridge project focuses on the western half of the continent, while other international collaborations focus on the far larger yet more stable eastern half.

Ice work if you can get it
Other research must be done on the ground. Scientists are drilling deep into the ice to collect signatures of past climate trapped inside, or looking for microbes that dwell in it. The race to drill down to the more than 200 freshwater lakes that pepper the continent is another tantalizing quest..

Some researchers work in Antarctica because the frigid continent, free of a native human population or meddling flora and fauna, provides a kind of natural laboratory.

"In most ecosystems you have plants all over the place, and they do a lot of things to complicate the system," said Byron Adams, a professor at Brigham Young University who studies the nematodes and other tiny creatures that are found in the few patches of ice-free soil in the Antarctic.

Still other researchers take advantage of the high altitude and clear air to peer through telescopes into distant space and the early universe.

At about 1.5 times the size of the United States, Antarctica has plenty of scientific real estate to go around.

At the heart of much of the research is the question of how the continent's ice is responding to climate change. Antarctica is home to some of the most dramatic effects of climate change seen anywhere on Earth, from melting glaciers to increasing winds to warming temperatures. The Antarctic Peninsula has warmed several times faster than the global average rate.

"We're asking really fundamental questions about how ecosystems respond to a changing climate, and ultimately the goal is to be able to make predictions about this," Adams told OurAmazingPlanet.

Despite the challenges ? bone-chilling winds, constant sunlight, extreme isolation and ever-changing weather ? many scientists said working in Antarctica is worth the hardship and the long hours spent packing as much work into an expedition as possible. Although it's not for everyone, they cautioned, the work can be deeply satisfying, breeding a sense of camaraderie that can last a lifetime.

"When you're out in the deep field, and you're only living with what you brought, and the plane turns and leaves, that's the Antarctica I prefer," Bindschadler said. "You really are in a different world."
